Wow! 47 mpg with 4 bikes, 4 people and all their gear is very impressive! I love to see people use ingenuity and creativity to get high mileage from smaller vehicles, even when heavily loaded. I think you need a new title- "Roof Rack or Trunk Rack? Neither!"

Nice work!
Thanks for the additional pics.
A creative (and let's face it: amusing) solution to the aero problem of the part-way open trunk lid. Posting this the front page.

Haha thanks a lot, I love the new title! Yah we got pulled over in the nicer part of town in Phoenix because my license plate is zip tied on! Lmao! He took me out of the car and I was just talking to the guy, telling him I could put more zip ties on if he wants. And he shines a flash light on it and is like holly crap! We didn't realize part of your trunk was missing! We just thought you had a bunch of bike crap strapped to the back of it. So then since I knew I wasn't in any trouble I just start taking going off on this guy. "Guess how many miles per gallon I get!" I don't know 30? No way dude try 64! Haha. In his mind he is just like who freaking cares, I race a v8 dodge charger around with the a/c on full blast all day for free you still look like an idiot lmao! They were so apauled that they never noticed or said anything About my cut off tail light! I've just been having a great time explaining to every one that I have a nice color matching trunk at home and I just built this as a science experiment.

wow, good idea! I never read all the posts just looked at the pics what of the cover for the hole flipped up to cover the bikes? would be pretty simple just hinges at the top and latches on the inside so you can still secure your trunk.

Yah I had that idea, even got out the hinges and self tapping screws. But decided against it for a couple reasons. 1. It wouldn't allow me to put the bikes in with the handle bars up for the shorter trips and 2. Because I was lazy haha. The way I did it was the simplest and most effective way to keep people out without buying locks.

In America you can get away with so much. In Europe you may fail the MoT just for removing the rear seats, let alone having a gaping hole in your trunk lid

haha, well if you were really lazy you could have taken out the passenger seat, put the bikes there and your friends in the trunk
