The whole concept of hybrid only parking spots is ludicrous. Having the money to buy a hybrid and taking advantage of the various subsidies doesn't make someone a hero worth honoring any more than the thousands of other categories I could think up. Is hybrid driving really on the same level of service to the country as being a veteran? Do hybrid drivers need more affirmation that they have indeed saved the world and are justified in their smugness?

I'm not saying all hybrid owners are smug idiots. I don't actually know any hybrid owners that I would consider smug, but regardless, the perception of many is that they are smug idiots. Special parking doesn't help that perception.

When I own a business, I will reserve a spot for those that have rescued a kitten from a tree and survivors of lightning strikes, for no particular reason.

Do I remember a South Park episode where everyone became "smug" with their special vehicles?

Get a smaller one of these, just slap it on the roof when you park. Instant hybrid parking pass!

I believe the idea behind fuel efficient/hybrid parking spaces is to encourage people to buy such vehicles, so that they get the best parking available.

Problem is, it doesn't work when there's ONE space.

Re: such spaces being a trap... parking space hypermiling is hardly common. And, if someone has an inefficient vehicle and does want to hypermile in and out of the parking lot, they'll get more gains than an efficient vehicle, so the efficient vehicle getting the inefficient space, and saving the efficient space for an inefficient vehicle uses less fuel overall.

with the parking sign reading, Gas Pig's only, the parking spot would be full , full time.

I vote for a Bicycle parking only sign , with lock up spots. The tired cyclists need the close parking more then the Slackers in the Volt's & Prius's or what ever.

Unless those spots had charging stations for plug-in hybrids and evs.

Gotta have to agree totally on that matter.

I have talked to very few hybrid owners, and they were either smug or illuded by all that marketing regarding overall savings while a cheaper beater would still remain more cost-effective.

I'm a smug idiot but I doubt my hybrid is to blame for that.
I bought it while comparing cost with my old beater and other cars. So far, it is cheaper to run because of the economy and reliability. Fuel savings and lower maintenance costs easily beat the depreciation.

I agree.

Allowing single occupant hybrids to use HOV lanes is a bad idea as well IMO. It is defeating the purpose of the lanes so badly here that I don't even use them most of the time. The far right lane actually moves better because too many single occupant vehicles are occupying the HOV lanes.

That is a term of affection, right?
