Tesla Fires

What do you think about the Tesla fires?

I personally think it's just a shame that these 3 events happened to occur all near each other. If the battery really has a 1/4" steel protective shield, then there is not much more Tesla can do to protect the battery. In a regular car the objects these people are running over would go through the floor of the car. If it continues to happen, then maybe there is something to it. I think it's just a coincidence though and not a design flaw.

Let me know what you guys think.

Run over something big in a gas powered car and sever a fuel line... you'll have a nice fire, too! My truck has a plastic gas tank, as did my last 2 cars... [sarcasm]They should all be recalled and have 1/2" thick steel tanks installed!!![/sarcasm]

Seriously blown out of proportion... But, I guess mainstream media has to do their job and find some lawyer who wants to sue everyone... maybe the NSA can track down the owner of the road debris (trailer hitch, if I read it correctly) and sue him! I'm sure there's someone who'll post on facebook "daymn.. lost mah hitch today!"

They're only garnering so much media attention because they're different (battery vs gas), regular cars lit on fire all the time back in the day.

Partially it's just something Tesla's going to have to work through, and partially the media is going to have to stop being d***s about it. I won't hold my breath on the 2nd one.

I guarantee you worldwide if you looked at gasoline powered vehicles, there would be 8 times as many that lit on fire in the same time period.

As a side note, the most recent one looked like it had custom rims/had been lowered somewhat, so that might have made it more prone to smashing the battery tray too.

More than that! In the U.S., an average of 417 car fires a day...

Cripes, 5.0 Mustangs used to catch fire on an alarmingly frequent basis, and how many millions of those did they make? They finally did a recall for the faulty ignition switch in the mid '90s, but still, at least with the Tesla there has to actually be some catastrophic event that causes it to happen. Mustangs would burn at any speed! But they were popular and mainstream, so the media didn't mention it too much. Funny that.

It's one of those things the old trains used to have on front (called a "cow catcher", I think) to push crud out of the way...

Too funny - you posted while I wasn't looking. What are the odds we'd pick exactly the same image to illustrate?
