Yep I totally agree w/ your mod choices! I'm usually pulling a trailer these days everytime I take it out of the garage it seems. Great Truck!
I just use my 248K Toyota for almost all of my driving, running my ScanGaugeii, my best 1/2 hr hyway trip was 47.1. Only mods are sythetic oil, cheapest synth at wally world, & aired up tires to 50 PSI.
I wish Toyota made a diesel, I saw some old ones on Ebay.
Happy Cummins Turbo Dieseling,
Dave

Toyota makes a lot of diesels, they're just not importing them into the US.

Yep, I agree, too bad! Honda was supposed to bring one here but from what I read in Diesel Power, that got the axe as well!

OP, I have an 08 dmax, my suggestion to add/repeat to the ones already made, pls try them out and update us on the improvements from each.
1. Tire pressure - max sidewall or your confort leve.
2. Cetane addy - TDR-S, sold in 5 gallon buckets from IN, or use Powerservice from wally's
3. Front Grill block - partial or full depending on outside temps - be VERY careful not to burn your cummins pls.
4. Front Skirt/air damp - like a body kit to push more air out and prevent it from going under the truck, I remember reading that 25% of all drag loss occurs due to lack of aero under the truck/car.
5. Aero topper for Bed - this is in my wish list someday when I have time, but search this forum and quite a few innovative products are there.
6. Programmer - WARNING might void warranty, research and look for cost effective solution, might not make sense to spend $1k to save $200
slowing down the best solution, and then a diesel addy in bulk to keep your per mile cost low.

For all the people here suggesting a grill block it is essential that it doesn't interfere with the intercooler. Otherwise you'll end up dropping your engines efficiency.
This paper is a must read for all people wanting to maximize diesel mileage.
Performance analysis of air-standard Diesel cycle using an alternative irreversible heat transfer approach
http://www.eis.hu.edu.jo/deanshipfiles/pub10311357.pdf
Note I disagree with some of the modeling for figures 4 and 5. It assumes that the cutoff ratio doesn't change. It also doesn't factor in the change in specific heat ratio.

Are you able to run BioD? You prolly have a DPF, right? From what I've read
B20 is supposed to be the best for adding lubrication, cleanlyness & best bang for the buck, encreases performances & I would think increase MPG's esp. the you are going after it anyway!
The newer diesels don't get the mileage like the ones even a few years older, for whatever reason. EPA, weight et al.

First off, thanks for asking this question Nubb, this is the reason I joined this web site to see if I could use any tips from some of the best on here. I own a 2001 Ford F250 Power stroke 4X4 crew cab, chipped, 6637 air filter and 4" exhaust. I get on average 14/15 MPG and straight HW driving I get 16/17 and always looking to get better MPG. My chip has a 50,70,90 and 120 settings, it make very little difference what setting I use MPG very by less than .5 of a mile.
I was laid off my job last year and did have a MB 300SD diesel that got 25/30 depending on weather. But had to sell due to money getting tight. So now this is my only means of driving. Unlike your Dodge my truck gets better MPG at 78mpg VS 70 or less, even when towing. I have a note book full of mileage records, so this is not a fluke. I have talked to other PS owners and hear the same thing for MPG at HW speeds.
So I am all up on looking for different ideas to up my mileage.
Thanks for a great web site and all the great post.
Doc.

So I am all up on looking for different ideas to up my mileage.
You'll find the figures about 78 mph being questioned. How does the truck do at 58 mph, on, say, a 300 mile roundtrip?
There's another Ferd owner on here averaging better than 25-mpg with that short bus motor (Big Dave).

Going 58 would be part of my city driving, anytime I drive HW I try and get on roads that are 65+ as I know my mileage is better. I use my CC all the time. But did find the thread about mod to a CC system, that I thought was very cool idea, not sure it would work on a diesel, but still like the idea.

I have a 2000 7.3 Excursion with nearly the same mods as you described. I will disagree with your well kept records. You really need a ScanGauge or similar device to get instantanious results, trip results can vary greatly. I've can clearly show you on my Scanguage how the mpg gets worse as speed increases. I can get some startling mpg at 40mph. I drive around 60-65mpg on the highway and can average mid twenties without much issue. You should re-evaluate the way you drive if saving money by getting better mpg is important to you.
