Does anybody know how many GPM the stock water pump on a 2001 Toyota Corolla has. I would eventually like to switch to an EWP and would like to know what to look for. I've seen the threads here on EM about making the switch, I just don't know what to look for, for my particular vehicle.

I don't think the electric water pump will help unless you use external power, like an alternator delete or solar powered electrical system.
I have ran them and haven't seen any improvement powering the water pump with alternator power.

It might actually help to decrease the fuel consumption, just like electric-driven radiator fans did.

Although my original plan for this mod was to save fuel and to eventually eliminate the belt, I also have found out through my research that an EWP is more consistent and gives you better control in that your pump is not solely based off engine speed, meaning if you are running high RPM, then come to a complete stop, you aren't cooling at idle speed you are cooling at whatever the coolant temp calls for. In a belt driven pump, you can't do this. Also, if engine temp is high when you shut off the vehicle, the EWP can continue to run, unlike a belt driven. Of course, having this control AND better FE would be awesome!

I agree with cripple rooster, I think in the long run it will be beneficial just like electric fans (which I have), I just don't think it will be AS beneficial, since the pump is running almost all the time, unlike the fans which are intermittent.

I talked to some guys on my Toyota forum and they couldn't find the specs, so if they can't, then the info is probably just not available.

I have put electric water pumps on 2 different vehicles and as far as I could tell it didn't help fuel economy.

Just a thought: with some sort of "smart controller", one would be able to eliminate the need of a thermostat, wouldn't they? Having the water pump only kick on at a specific temperature and turning off completely (or just reduced speed) once cooled to another specified temp?

Sounds good to me! With a controller, I bet fuel savings would for sure be seen. Would a micro controller work for this?

If one had an openable grill block, they could even have the block open when the water pump comes on for a more efficient cooling.

Were both of these conversions for cars in New Mexico, or at least somewhere that is similarly hot? I wonder if the fan is on a lot in a hot climate, then electric and belt-driven pumps won't have many efficiency differences, whereas here in the Bay Area, in a milder climate, one could benefit from the switching on and off of the pump.

Just a thought, what do you think?

Thanks for the link! I've seen thid thread in the list, but for some reason have failed to read through it. Weird considering how similar our cars are.

Can you tell me more about the davies craig? I was looking at that one, but wasn't sure if it would work for me. Have you found it to work for your car, or is it a little overkill? I assume with the similarities of our cars, that I can pretty much match up to yours without any major problems.

What size engine do you have? I did a side-by-side comparison of our cars and they are both 1.8 I4, but you mention in your thread a different size, so I was confused.

Is all the work you done with the coroplast from the same trip out searching for it, or have you made multiple trips? (You only mention one time of going out and getting some.)

Also, great job on the work you have done.
