Might be, but here our tax system did require bed to be stretched by 10 inches, so cars in our country will have 10 inches longer beds than any other country, it is hugely more usable, or not

We have also Skoda Felicia in truck form, we call such type of car pick-up here, don't know why.

That is even smaller, with tiny 1.3 litre gasoline engine, with VW 1.6 litre gas or with 1.9 litre diesel from VW, which is same engine that is in your car, but with bigger displacement, can't remember for sure, but I think it had longer stroke and same pistons?

Anyway, such Caddy or Felicia might be good for aeromodding as it is fairly easy to make bed cover in proper angle, cars will have small frontal area, small weight and narrow tires.

Caddy was VW Rabbit Pickup in North America according to Wiki and in Canada it got 1.6 litre turbo engine too.

Sorry for wondering bit OT here, just thought that it might be interesting.

1.9 had longer stroke, but basically the idi version is the same as the 1.6.

Picked up a TE04H and sidemount intercooler for $100. Hopefully it'll make a good entry level upgrade, at least.

Few things I should have noticed when I bought the turbo: the compressor-chra clamp is missing,
There is a bit of shaft play, possibly enough to cause contact with the housings (bad).

A rebuild would probably cost as much as buying a new turbo, if I were to do the rebuild and then get it professionally balanced.

I'm gonna have to suck up the loss on this one.

I was in a fair bit of pain when I picked up the turbo, and didn't really check it over too well.

I would check a couple things before you discount it. Are there markings showing where the vanes have contacted the housing? If you put you thumb on the shaft, with out bending it, can you push it into contact with the housing? If it doesn't touch, what is the clearance with a feeler gauge? Is there any evidence of oil going past the intake side or exhaust side oil rings? (any oil in the housings?) Is ther any evidence of oil coking in the bearing housing oil passageways?

If you don't have contact or oil leaking or coke, then run it! If you got coke, then I would have it cleaned or hot dipped. If you got oil leaking, then rebuild it yourself. You can follow one of the many good DIY rebuilds on the net. If you do it correctly, then you won't have to worry about balance. If you got wheel contact, then I wouldn't even try to rebuild it yourself.

I made an offer on aused k03 for the price of a rebuild kit for the te04h.

Chances are, I'll resell the turbo and manifold as a rebuild candidate, and just get what I can out of them.

Something I haven't accounted for is that itsa floating bearing turbo...and there was no oil pressure in it when I wiggled it around. With diesel oil in it, its likely to have much less play.

I didn't notice any thrust play, either, and haven't noted any turbine damage on the comp side.

The missing CHRA clamp bugs me a bit, though. I can get one from eBay, but $12+ for a clamp...

Still haven't gotten anywhere on this, haven't even taken the housings off to really inspect for damages.

Some bad teeth are pretty much keeping me at bay for now.

Oh yeah, baby!

Lol... The TE04H doesn't seem to have excessive play, and I'm sure once I get it sorted and get some oil pressure into the CHRA, it'll clear right up. There is no housing damage that I can see without disassembly, and it uses a common flange for the exhaust manifold, so even if I find out its junk, a new turbo can be had to bolt in the same spot cheaply.

Now that's a turbo! Now get that small turbo to spool that dog up and have some fun!
