I think the strength is in the threads. Not as much torque at the center of rotation.

I remember going through a bike supply magazine and a water bottle holder came with hollow screws.

Okay, Amazon says that my oil drain plug weighs 1.6 ounces. If I bore out five percent of one hundred other bolts of the same weight, I would save half a pound. Are there a thousand bolts that heavy in the average car? Five pounds!

Wikipedia says my car weighs 2,519 pounds. I know how to drop it to 2,514! Two-tenths of a percent, suckers! I am going to purchase a manual drill and have huge arms!

Honestly, drilling bolts in situ is tough if not borderline impossible.
Sawing off extra length is easy.


My opinion on the core being stronger is because it seems bolts are tough to drill. I might be wrong.

But you're damn right, at the end of the day, it sounds quite useless (an empty washing screen tank is much easier ...)

And want to do this, but I'm more concerned about getting the centers drilled out evenly without weakening one side... Thinking about getting a micro-mill to get the precision part... Grizzly.com

Question is how much can be safely drilled out without compromising strength and this stopped me from going further.

On the other hand, sawing off extra length is dead easy and totally safe.
