I don't care what GM wants to call it, I do not call the Volt an ELECTRIC car. Hybrid works for me, but a car that has a 4 cylinder engine and all the related ICE goodies so that is needs to belly up to the gasoline pump doesn't fit my definition of electric.

That said, I still hope they manage to bring it to market. The pricing structure looks like they don't want anyone to buy it though. If you financed $38000 to buy the car (it is a $40k + base price car, and don't expect to haggle down the price any time soon) at 5.25% for 60 months, the payments will be over $720 a month. But they will lease it to you for less than half that. IMO, they don't want to sell it. The $7,500 tax credit you'd get won't change your monthly payment unless you refinance it.

$750 monthly payments scare the heck out of me as well for a hybrid!

Currently, I am expected to pay an undisclosed "market price adjustment" which could be over $5,000. Since, they still have not confirmed that I can special order an all electric Volt, I have not made a deposit yet.

HYBRID (noun) -- an offspring of TWO animals or plants of different species.

...power sources: (1) battery and (2) gasoline. Last time I looked a battery is electro-chemical (electrons) energy while gasoline is petro-chemical (hydrocarbon) energy.

...sure sounds like the Chebbie Volt to me!

So are you asking them to rename it the Chebbie Hydrocarbon?

I have been working with a large Chevrolet dealer in Lake Charles, Louisiana. Our discussions have been stalling on the point that he will have to:
1) Train his personnel for a car that he thinks will not sell in this oil friendly town.
2) He must keep a floor model and not sell it which will cost him dearly.
3) They do not like the idea of selling an all electric (no engine) Chevy Volt to me.

Does anyone else have any new thoughts about the prospects of seeing the Chevy Volt on car lots this year?

Thanks!
They don't have a hybrid Volt to sell you as of now, much less an all electric version, that at this instant in time is vaporware.

When was the hybrid version supposed to be available? A year ago, two years ago, three years ago?

You will be lucky to see that version in 5 years. Why worry about selling or buying it in the first place? By that time there will be options from many other companies that are not even designed at this time.

Or you could just buy a used hybrid Volt for say 10 k, after you see how it works out as far as design, performance, or maintenance issues.

Mech

Can I buy a 2005 Toyota Prius in very good condition for $10,000 today? No, they are selling for more than that price because of their fuel economy.

In a nation where no one shames the people who pay $75,000 for a Cadillac Escalade ESV; why is there so much bemoaning and delay about the purchase of a 2011 Chevrolet Volt All-Electric?

That's the real problem here... why did we bail out GM... AGAIN?

There is no 2011 Chevy Volt that is all electric. I once drove my Insight to a Chevy dealer that offered me $5 just to show up, a year ago. I asked them if they had any cars that got 68 MPG, and they told me the Volt was going to do that. Now I read about 32 MPG highway once the battery runs down. My Altima beats that.

Maybe I will start looking for a salvage Nissan Leaf . I bought three totals over the last 30 years that had less than 400 miles on the odometer. One Mazda Miata had never been titled and the salesman who wrecked it left his hooch and pipe in the car.

People who pay 75k for a FSP Escalade, have 75k to throw away.

I prefer to buy my cars from people who already threw the money away, motorcycles as well.

Like a 2006 Rebel with 1887 miles for $800. Something like $3100 new. The previous owner paid $113 in Va state license tax when he bought the bike new.

Or a 2001 Eldorado for my 89 year old Pop for $6000 with 60k miles on the odometer.
He gets right at 30 MPG in that Caddy on the highway, but he only drives 4k miles a year so any new car (and he can afford one) will kill him in depreciation.

Look at the used car prices (real prices not some inflated book value but actual selling prices) of the average Chevrolet at 5 years age. For the depreciation a new Volt buyer will suffer you could buy a new Corolla and drive it 100+ thousand miles.

I like to recycle cars that died in accidents long before their useful lives had come to an end. Latest one was less than 12K to build. The new car window sticker was close to 30K 20,000 miles ago. After running the 3/4 tank of year old gas out of it, I am averaging 35MPG.

At 7 cents a mile for fuel how long will it take for me to spend the 25K plus in depreciation of a new Volt.

Also add the much higher property taxes, probably much higher insurance costs.

Even the Leaf operational costs are calculated at 6 cents a mile. The Volts value will be practically nothing when the battery warranty is gone. That same value will drop significantly before the warranty is gone.

Of course the $800 06 Rebel at 70 MPG is hard to beat on nice days.

regards
Mech
