At least until the late '90s, before 4WD became a mainstream feature on the locally-available variants of most mid-size and full-size trucks, it was usual to see their owners resorting to punch bags for ballast weight in order to improve traction.

Here, loading your trunk, boot or truck bed with sand bags was, and in some cases still is, pretty common.

It looks like the ID Buzz van will cost around $40,000.

It was standard procedure in Michigan. Although you need to restrain them they can do some damage. (My brother destroyed his tailgate with some frozen sand bags)

I like a 55 gallon barrel better. Light to put in the back of the truck and roll up against the front of the bed. Strap it down, fill it with water and you have 400 lbs just in front of the rear axle. When it is time to take it out: remove the bung, drain the water, and roll it out.

That would be a very good price. A Buzz would be $30K after tax credits here in Oregon.

For reference the Chrysler Pacifica starts at $35K and the PHEV starts at $40K (30K after tax credit)

I always just shoveled out my space directly into the back of the truck.

I need to check up again on Tax Credits here in Colorado. It seems like they used to be great but have recently started dropping quite a bit. I was tempted to get a Prius Prime when I got the Avalon. Back then I could have gotten $9,500 total in tax credits. But IIRC, the Colorado tax credit has been cut in half and will probably be cut even further by the year 2024.

When I got my used Leaf I was able to get a Colorado tax credit on it even though it was used. That loophole was quickly fixed after that though.

It will be interesting to see who has federal tax credits left in 2023. VW should still have some as they had only used 18K credits as of June 2020. (The latest numbers I found)

Telsa and GM are out and Nissan and Toyota are close be being out. I wouldn't be surprised if they start phasing out credits in 2022. Ford isn't far behind.

Toyota and Ford wasted most of their credits on PHEVs with small batteries and partial credits.

The DOE has a good page on State EV incentives and credits:

I haven't seen anybody doing it for a while. Most of the mid-size and all the full-size trucks officially available in my country have been 4WD, even though some privately-imported full-sizes more road-oriented remained RWD.

Buzz was the name of the concept vehicle. So far none of the production cars have kept the same name as the concept.

I think they are a bit too early for April Fools with the Voltswagen name.
