VW Revisits 235 mpg Prototype

I doubt it will ever make it to the US, and it's pricey but at least they're trying.

AKA VW 1liter (1 liter per 100km)

Very cool. maybe energy prices will go high enough for them to build a few.

Thats a pretty sweet car. If they drop the price for actual production if/when that happens, I'd definitely get one... I wonder if it comes with a factory installed coating of rain-x on the windshield.

I believe the wipers are tucked just under the hood so Rain-X may not be necessary. I think I see the right (starboard) one at least. Love that cd of 0.16!!! That little nub on left (port) side -- is that a signal light or door handle? In either case, that looks like its protruding more than necessary but I'm sure there's a reason behind that.

If we ever see it in the US it won't be the same.

The diesel will be gone. It'll never make Tier II and if it did it would require a $4,500 filter rig.

It'll be made of something other than carbon fiber. A $100,000 economy car ain't gonna cut it.

The 2009 Jetta Diesel metts T-II/CARB and it's only ~$4,500 above the base model. I doubt a diesel engine is the same price a gasoline engine is, so I'm pretty sure that by the time it gets here, if it gets here, the emissions system won't be $4,500. Around a grand is my guess. And being a limited production run, it's naturally going to be more expensive than mas production would be. I think if VW mass produced these babies they would be ~$20k-35k in the states.

Tier II is rough; I'll admit it.
But remember when automakers said they couldn't make cars that complied with CAFE standards for a reasonable amount of money? Remember when they said that emissions controls would cost as much as the cars themselves?

The only thing that gets me about TierII is that some of the systems don't work well with BioDiesel (I like that option, even if most never use it).
