No news, other than that I now think the title is a bit inappropriate as there's no more progress; and that it was a mistake to file this under success stories

I'm stuck around 4.5 L/100km (52.3 mpg US) - while the dealer's neglected and abused replacement S40 could be hypermiled @ just under 4 L/100km (58.8 mpg US) .

Why not abuse Hagar for a while and see if he likes it

(Edit - Apologies, we don't have those dots above the a on our anglo-saxon keyboards)

That's what's happening.

More oil swaps - oil dilution with diesel could kill the turbo.
Minimal maintenance & repairs.
No preventive parts swapping anymore.
Filters to be replaced when needed, not when scheduled.
If anything breaks, i'll decide wether he's still worth the replacement parts.

And no more messing about @ Volvo dealerships.

Hägar's glory days are over

He's also starting a new quirk - a little jerk at the end of the clutch pedal stroke when shifting into 1, 2, or 3.
It doesn't happen too often yet, but it's there.

But you do see it as an "ä" in your browser? If so, then just highlight it, then ctrl+c and ctrl+v. That's how I got the umlaut in this post.

That's what I was thinking as well.

It has also been bucking a bit when crawling in 1st - and that wasn't the DPF, that's for sure .

I don't think it's the friction plates themselves, as it catches solidly.
This seems to happen after the plates have caught - at the very end of the pedal travel.

The only clutch part I've ever worn out in 23 years has been a hydraulic pressure seal.

This is a problem I had with Helga and I planned a remap so I went with a sport clutch and an SMF. The Bosch service place I used to use with Helga stated they had DMFs go anywhere between 10K and 150K miles with no driver factor explaining why. If you plan to let Hagar (sorry no copy/paste ) run into the earth then maybe an SMF conversion would be useful if there is one - it will outlive the car. Otherwise the DMF will live like this for ages.

No, I'm planning to run it on the cheap.
No more big expenses on the Volvo.
Next big things are the camshaft drive chain and DPF - both normally due at 240.000km.
The DPF was replaced again around 146,000 km, so it should normally be OK until 266,000 km - though I wonder how long it'll survive these regeneration Groundhog Days.
I won't replace the camshaft chain, so if I still have Hägar by then, it'll do until it snaps.

Anything serious breaks, or fails the technical check, and Hägar is heading for a car salvage lot.
A new battery is about the limit of what I'm prepared to spend on it at any given time - I might even get a salvage battery.

I'm totally done spending good money on this car.

If it doesn't get much worse, I'll live with a bit of occasional jerkiness.

Lemme throw in a few a's with umlaut for ya

Welcome to bangernomics

I'm sad to see this thread turn out this way, you've fought a good fight..surely there has to be scope for some American style litigation?

Good luck with running it into the ground, sometimes that can be fun too
