Elk inhabit forested areas at high altitude within a range where a water source is nearby. They prefer the higher elevations from 7,000 to about 10,000 feet which is referred to as their "summer range". They will migrate to lower elevations during the winter when heavy snow forces them to seek lower ground. Their typical habitats include the White Mountains area, the Mogollon Rim and the Kaibab Forest.
Herds can commonly be seen in the areas around Flagstaff, Williams, Payson, Heber Overgaard, Show Low, Pinetop Lakeside, Greer, Alpine and generally any forested area.

When you drive through forested country, always be on the lookout for elk. Every year there are many incidents of elk suddenly leaping onto roads and even freeways. At a weight of 800 to 1,200 pounds, those type of accidents can cause serious damage and can result in fatalities.

Arizona Elk
Mom lives in Show Low and Payson is about halfway, so I consider myself "safe" between Phoenix and Payson. They also generally come out at night, so as long as we drive during the day, we should be okay.

Even responsible drivers cause accidents. Furthermore, we don't need survival of the fittest to select out all bad drivers considering it isn't a skill that will be relevant for much longer. The people it selects out may have many positive attributes to contribute to family, friends, and community.
Another problem is that due to adverse selection, the worst drivers are likely to be the ones selecting the larger vehicles. This would be an unnatural selection since those with the poor skills are the ones surviving while the responsible drivers parish.

LOL. Paraphrasing: the dumb people who choose a 20-mpg SUV are more likely to cause accidents.

In the near future, the rich will be the first ones buying the automated vehicles that swerve and brake in milliseconds - much faster than a human could ever do.
It's the poor that will be dying in car accidents.

Frank, since computers NEVER make mistakes, that would mean that ANY accident would obviously be the "other" persons fault!

While on the one hand I'd like to be chauffeured around by a fembot android; on the other, I'd like to oversteer through corners on gravel roads on my own.

Sure the usage of SUVs can be pointed out as a national security hazard due to the increased dependence on foreign oil, but it's not an excuse to not develop cleaner alternative fuels.
