I'd stick a 1.2 TDI 3L from across the pond in there. It got the Audi A2 over 80 mpg easily.

I agree, if you talk about using a different engine, you have to go with one of the TDI versions. Can't beat that mileage.

In the "For Sale" section on InsightCentral, there's a complete Insight power train offered by a guy that swapped a bigger engine into his. Even if you just went with the IC engine instead of the full hybrid, I don't think you'll find too many engines that'll give you better FE.

If you can get 50.14 mpg for a tank from an Aveo , and you can, then I'm willing to bet you can beat that with a Yaris by a respectable margin (stock), and I personally would like to try. In fact it's kind of a secret ambition of mine, I like the Yaris, but right now the Aveo's what I got to work with.

The bigger question in some circles, namely, my racing buddies "can the metro pull itself out of it's own tracks?" LOL
Seriously, I was talking about this whole 'engine swap' idea with a friend the other day. Seems it's just impracticle foe most pepole to pull off these days. When I was 16, I shoehorned a 400cc engine into a 250cc bike. At 17, I squeezed a 327cu in Chevy into the engine bay of a '71 Chevy Vega. But those were carburated vehicles, when the Vega had very modest smog equipment requirements. These days, a TDI or VW Lupo engined Miata would make a fun little sportscar, a metro engine and trans in just about anything would be great. But the computer controls add a whole new dimension and level of complexity to such a project. Then you have the state emissions test to get by every other year in California...
It's too bad, because these days, young guys (and gals) have real limited oportunities to learn while working on their cars.

I'd rather an insight with a 1.2 TDI under the bonnet

just fyi folks... this was more of a hypothetical situation (concept car kind of thing). i wasn't actually suggesting it could really work - though from some of your posts it sounds like it might actually be possible!
the wish, really, was to combine what i think are the killer looks of the yaris with the fuel economy of the geo xFI. sort of a concept car kind of thing. hehehehehe.
would be nice though eh? for tiny little cars, i really do think the Yaris is the best looking thing out there at the moment. slap some OEM (again, if they made them) wheel skirts on the thing... pull 50+ mpg's without any major mods or driving techniques, such as is the case with the xFI's... that would be super awesome.
at any rate, hopefully someone will start coming out with a new version of the 3cyl now that gas is through the roof. perhaps a Geo "2.0" can save GM from collapse!!! LOL

I doubt there will be anything like a Geo 2.0, they're too busy betting on the Volt.

Or even better than a Yaris with a Metro engine, one with an electric motor!
