I use a ceramic room heater. It can pump out 1300 Watts at full power. I just sit it on the passenger seat and face it towards the windshield. That seemed to work much better than being located in the footwell.

I also put it on a timer so I don't even have to walk out in the cold to plug it in.

I also use a small electric heater. I ran a power cord through the firewall and have an outlet between the seats.

Do you guys find lean burn very inconsistent? I have. One trip it'll just lean burn its heart out. I have adequate power in lean burn, maintaining 45 mph very easily at 100 mpg. The next trip I'll be struggling to even keep in lean burn at 45 mph at all while maintaining speed.

What factors affect lean burn mode?

I don't find too much variation, but as MetroMPG says, sometimes the battery is charging slightly in the background without showing up on the meter. Rain also pretty greatly increases rolling resistance, and cold does all sorts of mean things to economy. On a cold, wet or snowy trip where the battery is charging, I see half the mpg numbers as on a warm clear day.

Route your intake back around to the cat. I find lean burn to be way easier to enter/keep when the intake temp is 85-120F.

What he said! These are finicky cars.

If you want to get more consistent mpg, just open up the back hatch and flip the switch of the IMA system to "off". I got a couple less mpg when I turned mine off, but I wasn't fighting to maintain lean burn all the time.

Of course then I sacrificed autostart/stop, AC, assist, etc . . .

I think I still have some fixing to do really. It isn't just background charging. I know it charges with the indicator and even when the indicator isn't showing. Its something more than even that. I've even had issues in non-lean burn mode a fair number of times now. I don't get consistent power delivery. It feels like power surges as I'm accelerating even (not in lean burn). It doesn't happen all the time, just here and there. So, there still has to be some issues engine wise.

Woo, finally had lean burn enable. Its the first time in about a week. With the cold weather, my mpg has been plummeting like a brick. I'm down to 53.8 for the tank.
