How do Ecomodders' commute distances compare to everyone else?

My commute is currently 5.5 miles. A little city, with mostly rural 45 mph.

The house we're buying:
17 mile commute. all rural. 55mph, and then 45 near work.
I do have the option of driving along the lake to work as well, and that's all 55mph.

I used to drive 18 miles to work when I lived in Chicago, and it was usually a fight to get anywhere. It was an hour each way, unless traffic was bad, then it was anybody' s guess. Now, 54 miles one way, no traffic (even during rush hour) and I go almost 3x as far in the same time.

I know the words to almost every song on the radio now no more road rage, more maintenance instead!

I like the relaxed pace without traffic anyway. It's my own little "wind down time" so I don't bring a bad day home to my family

About 16 m (25 k), mostly rural, passing through a few villages, takes about 30 minutes.
Mostly carpooling, when on my own I go by bike 2-3 days a week, taking 60-70 minutes.

Exactly what I had, only my commute was 40 but not much of a difference. I cannot believe how much of a better mood I am now, not to mention the 2 hours of opened up time a day. (My commute is 5 miles now).

My boss is a father of five and built their 'dream house' almost 50 miles away from his office, through some of the worst congestion in this region. Says that 4 hr/day commute is his only quiet time to unwind....:

32 miles of mostly country roads. Couple stops at 3.5 and just over 25 miles to pick up co-workers. Total of just over a half hour each way; 45 minutes in winter.

But I think it's necessary to get a true picture of how (and whether) people travel to work. For instance, if you just look at the people whose commute is 1 mile or more, you might conclude that the average worker's commute is growing. But add in the people who telecommute, or live within walking/biking distance, and the average might actually be shrinking.

Yeah :-) And flexible work hours, too, which means I'm going to shut this computer off and take the dogs for a hike, then probably work a couple more hours when we get back.

my commute is 80mi one way but now only 2 days/wk it used to be 3-4 days. 30mi 2lane then 43mi freeway then 8mi 2 lane 45mph.

For many years it was about three miles each way, most often bicycled. Now it's zero.

Friend of mine recently put a room in his house up for rent; a prospect now commutes 60 miles each way to her presumably $15/hr job. Lessee, she puts in a 10 hour day vs townies' eight (darn right the commute counts as work time) plus only gets paid for seven after deducting for fuel. Pretty raw deal IMHO but there sure are many who think it's worth it. :/
