Had the 535i out for a play today..

£25 got me 145 miles.. that is a not too shabby 35.36 mpg (UK)

And that includes some "spirited" driving!

A quick google suggests official MPG is in the very low 20s, that would make you a Hypermiler

Yay!

It does a lot less per gallon sideways though....

Plan is to build it into a track car and track combimned MPG for going from Unit to track, round track then home again, and see if I can still beat the official MPG figures..

We've started stripping it, so there may be a build thread soon

This should really go into both smiles and annoyances, but on balance a smile I think

I've booked Mrs A and me for a 3 night break in Paris for her Birthday in early July - thats a smile as i) she deserves it, ii) it will be a nice break, iii) she deserves it again and iv) it consumes the new car fund so Helga also stays.

Annoyance ? I sent an email to friends about it so nothing else would be scheduled for that weekend and of course included Mrs A in the group.

At least she is looking forward to it.

Nice work!

I've spent this evening slowly convincing my Dad, that, as he's recently retired, its high time Maw and Paw got a decent car..

cue lots of 5 and 7 series bmw diesels, and the occasional nippy petrol too..not to mention the mother's penchant for Jaguars..

Oh the 6pot/v8 goodness of it all-novocane for the soul.

Even better is some of the diseasals returning better mpg than their 2.0 auto avensis petrol

So, I filled up my girlfriends Focus last night and just after I started pumping a younger guy(early 20's or so) in a Prius pulled up on the other side of the pump. Now, anyone who has searched around this site for more than a few weeks knows what Prii are capable of in the right hands. I asked the guy what kind of mileage he got in his car and what most of the driving was (city/highway). He answered that he typically got 30-35 MPG city and around 38-42MPG highway and "love how much money I save compared to the '97 Civic I used to own" and started gloating about his mileage compared to the Focus. We continued chatting until both of us had full tanks, at which point I asked him what his tank average was for this fillup. He replied with "I made 33.54, according to the calculation on my phone", I giggled at this slightly as i showed him my phone which showed 35.69 MPG. He didn't believe me so I showed him my SGII with a readout of 35.6 MPG, at which point he accused me of faking it, and I responded telling him he should stop hugging trees and learn to drive more efficiently. I called him a tree hugger only because I believe some people (not all) buy the prius, insight and other hybrids thinking that they are helping the environment, and not realizing that they can help just as much by learning how to drive better.

NOTE: This is in no way meant to flame hybrid drivers, only to show that knowing how to drive better can make produce better mileage than having the car do all the work.

But knowing how to drive AND having a car that'll do some of the work will get you better mpg than either alone. The Insight's getting 71.2 mpg average for the just under 100K miles I've owned it, exactly twice your 35.6 :-)

+1

My neighbours have a 2010 Hybrid Civic - these are the "naked" neighbours.

They get ~35 out of it.

Stopping for lunch and getting asked about my car

When they find out my last tank was 53MPG they respond "that is more then my motor cycle".

At the same stop I am asked if a am a big "green" person. I answer that the green I like is saving $$$$.
