New 2010 VW Polo: lighter, safer, higher mpg (71), better looking... Coming here?
I like.
Source: The All New New Volkswagen Polo
- weighs 7.5% less than the vehicle it replaces – despite being marginally wider and longer
- but it's also safer
- more efficient
- Upcoming BlueMotion II version of this car expected to return 85 mpg (Imp) / 71 mpg (US) (UK test figures)
The 2010 BlueMotion II version will feature:
- all-new 1.2-litre three-cylinder common rail diesel
- automatic Stop-Start
- regenerative braking (not for hybrid propulsion, likely a "smart" alternator system)
- gearbox with revised ratios
- optimised aerodynamics beneath the vehicle
- suspension lowered by 15 mm
- low rolling resistance tyres
And I've read several articles that suggest the new version might come to North America. It would certainly sell well in Canada.

That's cool, was not happy to see the first polo get waylaid on its way across the pond. I wonder if Detroit could make something like that. I'm sure there is plenty of "prior art" for most of those features (i.e. golf carts).

Wow. It hardly needs to be ecomodded; only ecodriven.
I like the way the gap between fenders and tires is small. The roofline slopes downward without creating too small of a hatch opening. The antenna is small, pointing back, and unoffensive. The only mods I see room for are a partial grille block depending on climate, and some smooth wheel covers.
Yeah, I'd pay US$15000 for the BlueMotion version.

My bet: IF the BlueMotion diesel version even crosses the pond, it's going to cost a bit more than $15K US for that technology.
Edit: My 2nd bet: IF the Polo comes here, we'll only get the highest output gasoline engine. Europeans will have their choice of 5 engines, gas & diesel. Feeling cynical this morning

The only 3L cars I know of were the VW Lupo and Audi A2.
I would be first in line to get one with the 1.2 CRdi here.

You're right. I guess I mixed up the Polo 1.2L TDI and the Lupo 3L.

When it finally arrives on our shores, however, expect only the new gas-powered 1.2-litre four.
