You just want to get the gasses out as quickly as possible with minimum back pressure. Theres no valve overlap or scavenging to worry about. The prechamber traps enough heat to keep combustion going for the next cycle. 84-87 W201 (190D) are the most likely 5 speeds you'll find. 77-83 W123 (240D) are the most likely 4 speed manuals. The OM616 in the 240D might actually bolt up to your existing transmission but not 100% sure.

I had heard that there was no limit to exhaust size for efficiency with diesel like there is with gas, but I heard it from a diesel drag racer, so took it with a grain of salt. Now that it is corroborated by an FE enthusiast like myself I feel more solid about it.

Well guys and galls, the ecomodder who is swapping me the diesel for my electric truck is dropping it off at 11pm tonight (they work nights) so Santa is coming early this year!

In unrelated news, I pulled off a trade today, the wife wanted a recumbent trike (pedal powered) and I was able to swap a full suspension mountain bike and some woodworking tools for one! Better yet it is a cargo trike with a 500lb load capacity! I am on someones nice list.

woo hoo, its here. Has an awesome speed vs. fuel economy chart in the owners manual! love that german engineering, will figure out how to load it up here, highlights are: 58mpg at 25mph :-) 47mpg at 40mph. Nice, can work with that.

Got the drivers door latch and window fixed.
Next is brakes, traced the poor brakes to leaky master cylinder. Thank the baby Jesus that the vacuum pump is good, I guess they are unobtanium.
Just need to do a valve adjustment and compression check to verify that the engine is doing well before I buy my brake master cylinder, then can move onto the fun hypermiling stuff.

On the horizon:
Trouble shoot people heater (block heater works great :-)
trouble shoot wipers.
max tire pressure
belly pan
rear wheel well skirts
balanced/rebuilt injectors
electric fan(have an old taurus high volume one that was free)
pizza pan smooth wheel covers
synthetic fluids
underside of hood insulation
grill block if heat load allows
wheel bearings
what do ya'll think?

Okay, but only cause it's almost Christmas

That last pic is the fuel usage/speed ratio chart that is out of the owners manual. Bet we wish every car came with that :-)
I can only imagine that all those speed/fuel usage figures are in 4th gear?

My 300D turbo diesel has an ARV valve. Basically it just vents the turbo charge back around the compressor. I think it was put on engine to prevent the Nox emissions. At 55 mph it wouldn't boost even though the turbo was spinning.

I blocked the valve that controlled the ARV and the engine immediately gets 4-5psi at 55 mph cruise and now gets about 3 mpg better. My last fill was 32 mpg.

I figure it this way. Some boost increases the compression ratio giving more heat to the combustion and more efficiency.

Pretty sure that motor is SOHC with rockers on ball pivots. No pushrods.

that sunny picture is more false than cake.

Got the new brake master cylinder on her, got the brakes bled, and she is road worthy! It was cool enough today to test out the heater, and it is working just the heater blower no work still, and no wipers, gotta love working on old junk.

Almost time to get the festiva prettified and thrown on the craigslist.(my current daily driver)

This thing is so close to being ready to be my daily driver I can taste it :-)

My commute to work is 6.5miles each way with a max speed of 30. About 2 miles of that is through a small town with the oldschool "green flood" timed lights, so as long as you don't rabbit to the next one no brakes required. If the factory fuel usage chart I posted isn't full of crap, I should be pulling down some grate mpg numbers at these slow speeds.

Tomorrow I am getting a little side tracked and checking out a couple of motorcycle projects. One is a 79 honda xl250s (80mpg factory specs) the other is a honda elite 80 (90mpg factory specs) for the missus and I to ride around on.
