Well, you can buy door lock actuators for $5 on ebay so I imagine they cost less than that to an OEM. I can't imagine this is much different at all. Plus its all self contained and protected from the elements.

What's interesting to me is that the middle yellow shutter in the picture is perforated with little holes (right?!?!?!). Therefore air is still getting into the lower grille at less than 33% (i.e. area of 1 perforated shutter / 3 shutters total).

On Volvo DrivE models, 70% of the airflow is blocked.

Now that I'm looking for it, it's ridiculous how many of those big front grills are actually blocked off on the inside right from the factory.
On an MX5 about half the grill is fake.

At least they have the sense not to leave them wide open.

What I don't get is why most of the upgrades made to eco models can't be standard across the range, as I see it factory eco mods are a bit like safety features, if you have them developed for a model of car, they should be standard, not optional.

Exactly !
I'd also save 'm some money by having to design less different parts and keep less parts in the supply chain (though not on the Cruze Eco as it seems to be using a lot of parts to open and close that grill ! )

Factory designed Chevy Cruze variable grill block

Just found this article on treehugger.com. Looks like the Chevy Cruze will have a variable grill block in the future. It's supposedly good for .016 cd. There's also a video of the car in a wind tunnel at the link below.

I definitely agree with you on that. It is much cheaper compared to that of the OEM door lock actuator. And I have tried using aftermarkets.. did not work for me actually.
