That's pretty much construction in general.

People want things built quickly and cheaply. Cheaply as in they'd prefer a 5 bedroom home with the cheapest materials and labor possible over a fire-proof, flood-proof, tornado-proof, earthquake-proof 2 bedroom home.

Take drywall vs plaster. Drywall installation is much cheaper than plaster, but get a few inches of water in your home and all the drywall around the bottom has to be cut off. Not so with plaster.

The same goes for fiberglass insulation verses mineral wool or foamed cement, which are not only more water resistant but also more fire-resistant than fiberglass too.

But the long term cost of a building is it's biggest cost. The more you put into making the building durable the longer it will last. There's this old story about three little pigs. It still applies today.

Hate to tell you, but, the actual 75 years old wood lath and plaster walls fell apart when my house was flooded by vandals. Which was a shame because they were straight, true and even. The drywall that replaced them wasn't.

But we're talking about a 75 year old house. And the old wood was probably the weak link. Get a flood tomorrow and your drywall is toast.

.

Plaster is a generic term including many materials and formulas.

Plaster and wood lath to me contains cement in the mix . Making it “Hard” and water resistant.

Drywall contains gypsum and no cement. Making it “Not hard” and readily absorbent.

However.

Wood lath readily absorbs water. Expanding as it does so, thus cracking the “plaster” causing damage.

Concrete doesn't burn well. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought the whole point in living in the woods was to have trees everywhere around you for a good distance. So to protect yourself, you'd have to clearcut about 200 yards all around.

In the pines, in the pines, where the sun never shines, That's where I might as well be. Where it's dark and it's cold, and the sun never shines, Just as cold as your love for me.
My brother lives in the country, but not the woods. He prefers overlapping fields of fire.

My ideal roof would be overlapping fired ceramic dragon scale.

One would think that after all 75 years, the wood lath dry shrank enough to generate cracks and loose spots.

But I do like the get wet and swollen part of the comment.

I have until I let guard down and let things go.
Probably what will happen is I will get a lot of rain during solar maximum ramp up years, then a long no sunspot inspired drought makes all that green stuff die, then it's brown, then it turns red and orange then black.

Nm only has 1 fire burning more than 100 acres.
California, more than I can count.
So far no California smoke this year.
