Believe I've gotten to the bottom of my issues - looks like the 12v lithium is gradually dying over the course of a few weeks, and I don't notice it until the voltage drops very sharply near zero charge as the caps still have plenty of starting current. It's losing more charge while the car is sitting between drives than it's getting back while driving. I'm unsure if the balance circuit(s) are primarily responsible but I'm thinking removing the resistor between battery and caps will let it get fully charged on my short commute. I'll investigate the balance circuits this weekend.

Or a bypass relay for the resistor.

The point of the resistor was to limit charging rate in winter, and unfortunately it seems to be doing that too well. |

Oh, gotcha. I thought the resistor was to limit starting current, and that the alternator fed directly to the battery.

Sounds like you need a low voltage cut. Maybe if you're starting current is low enough with the caps you could find a low voltage cut with an appropriate rating.

What ohm resistor did you put in series with the supercaps?

The resistor in series with the batteries is 0.3 ohms.

Seems like the battery should be topped up well enough at that low resistance. Would be curious to throw some meters in there to see what's going on. I picked up a few for something like $10 each.
