I think the probability of any country leaving the EU has been dramatically decreased by the fiasco that is Brexit.
One might suggest that Brexit has been superseded by subsequent events. Is Germany going to pony up for those in the Southern tier?

Well, yeah, we've been undercounting cases from day one. Not much sense in testing a corpse when you've got a long line of sick people that can't get tested.

Houston hasn't reported a surge of coronavirus cases. But its hospitals tell a different story.
A jump in hospital admissions suggests that most coronavirus cases have gone undetected in America's fourth biggest city.
Quote:

The 25-county region surrounding Houston had reported fewer than 950 confirmed coronavirus cases among its 9.3 million residents as of Monday. But on that same day, there were 996 people hospitalized in the region with confirmed or suspected cases of COVID-19, according to the advisory council count. That figure is not cumulative and does not include patients with COVID-19 who were hospitalized and released before Monday.
Yep. 950 positive test results since day one, but 996 in the hospital that day being treated for it. It looks like Texas is doing as good a job keeping coronavirus down as West Virginia was. The same way Florida was so good at keeping unemployment down.

It looks like a trend.

Do you remember the rumors of a nuclear war?

I do not suppose that anyone will ever decide to take and store samples from people who died of flu\pneumonia-like conditions. Data is important to me, but this isn't the highest priority.

I guess it depends on what you mean by "pony up". Since the last financial crisis the EU has created the ESM to handle future ones. The most famous being Greece.

The ESM and IMF loaned Greece money to refinance their loans with the terms that the current bond holders had to forgive 50% of the outstanding balance, the new loans were highest priority on repayments, and Greece had to get approval for their budgets.

The ESM (European Stability Mechanism) has so far helped Greece, Cyprus, Hungary, Ireland, Latvia, Portugal, Romania, and Spain. To date all their loans are current. EU states paid into the fund based on GDP and 540 billion euro of the 700 billion fund has been loaned.

Germany provided 27% of the ESM funds. France 20%, Italy 18%, and Spain 12%

One of these days Germany will get tired of apologizing for WWI and WWII and flip a switch.

I wasn't aware that Germany felt obligated to help the rest of the EU because of the 1930s. Or, for that matter, that Germany was all that responsible for 1914.

I am staying hopeful!

According to Coronavirus in NY: Cases, maps, charts and resources new cases in New York are up slightly over yesterday, but still lower than 4 of the last 6 days. There were more deaths than yesterday, but not by a huge margin. There were more cases, too, but it was smaller proportionately.

Hopefully this peaks soon and we can stop worrying about our breath being silent, but deadly!

Be of good cheer.

www.nytimes.com: Where Have All the Heart Attacks Gone? — Except for treating Covid-19, many hospitals seem to be eerily quiet.
Quote:
I have heard this sentiment from fellow doctors across the United States and in many other countries. We are all asking: Where are all the patients with heart attacks and stroke? They are missing from our hospitals.

Yale New Haven Hospital, where I work, has almost 300 people stricken with Covid-19, and the numbers keep rising — and yet we are not yet at capacity because of a marked decline in our usual types of patients. In more normal times, we never have so many empty beds.
....
The public needs to know that hospitals are equipped not only to care for people with Covid-19 but also those who have other life-threatening health problems. Yes, we in health care are working to keep people out of the hospital if we can, but we can safely provide care for those people who are not sick from Covid-19. Masks and protective gear for health care workers and patients go a long way to ensure a safe environment. Also, people with chronic conditions need to know that avoidance of needed care could ultimately be as big a threat as the virus itself. As we fight coronavirus, we need to combat perceptions that everyone else must stay away from the hospital. The pandemic toll will be much worse if it leads people to avoid care for life-threatening, yet treatable, conditions like heart attacks and strokes.
New York Times didn't count reading the article against a monthly allotment. Paywall down? Whatever doesn't kill the herd makes the herd stronger?
