Possibly that filler cap is for fuel. Maybe, the radiator was against the grill at the back. Seems strange... did a fan blow air into the wake?

Also, in this photo there is an air scoop ahead of the rear wheel well, but no fuel door.

Now I'm wondering about just forward of the inline block. Something rectangular and another filler.

For sure a dusty road would fill the engine compartment.

Lots of dust in the bay, but also a better weight distribution. If this is water cooled, there must be a cooling system wedged forward somehow. Interesting. More pics, from two different cars... more revealing:

Yup. In the first pic without the [heater?] one can see the lower radiator hose, and the bakelite plastic pressure cap housing.

The air intakes in front of the rear wheels obvs feed the radiator.

That's originally water-cooled, but at least a few were repowered with air-cooled Volkswagen engines.

I have already seen this very same Bolt at a gas station (which also has a fast-charger for EVs on its premises), but didn't stop to take a closer look, then only today I was finally able to take a few pictures of it.

EV connection to that Dauphine.... that car was the basis of one of the earliest "modern" EV's made as brand new vehicles, in 1959:

IIRC every model of the Escort prior to the current Chinese one always had 4-cyl engines.
