I guess I don't really understand what you are planning with the web control panel. Does it link to my LAN or my laptop top locally like bluetooth or is there some sort of dedicated display hardware that goes in the dash?

I'm planning some sort of web control /dash panel.. so you can mount a small tablet or something and monitor all parameters, graphs maybe and change settings.. over wifi

Not sure if Paul's DC controller uses the same micro controller as Paul's AC controller. But when i was checking out the AC controllers microcontroller details i found it has an ethernet port and the ability to run a web server. So if the DC controller was using the same micro controller then there would be the chance of adding a web server to that controller.
I imagine it could be used for monitoring, statistics, configuration, software gauges, etc.
If this happened then a cheap $15 wifi bridge could be plugged into the controllers ethernet port and then any wifi device with a browser would be able to attach to the controller. Smartphones, tablets PCs.

Just thought i would mention it before anyone put in too much effort making an external web box for the controller. If it has the ability to do it itself then why not. Would make it easier once setup as the web server within the controller would have access to all the controllers variables. Also we wouldn't have to worry about some sort of comms protocol between the controller and an external device and keeping them both up to date and compatible.

I'm not sure that adding the webserver on the micro isn't dangerous in terms of processing power..

Possibly someone could burn your IGBT's by DDOS-ing the web server and stealing its clock cycles?

Paul, and thoughts on that?

After the clarke, park, inverse clarke and park transforms, etc. The poor micro I think will not have a whole lot left. I think we should leave the other stuff out. Im trying to keep evrrything through hole, so people cam assemble things themselves down the road. That leavea me with a dspic30f4011 40 pin micro with not a lot of extra pins. Debugging surface mount stuff has been a nightmare for me in the past.

I've been reading the datasheet of the dspic30f4011, and I couldn't find any evidence of Ethernet support.. so..I guess it's no discussion

Quite correct, i got my wires crossed.

The dspic30f4011 provides the TCPIP stack, web server and NIC driver, but it needs a RTL8019 ethernet chip to complete the hardware side of things.
I was looking at the datasheets, jumping around from diagram to diagram and when i saw the diagram with the RTL8019 chip and a handful of components connecting to an ethernet port i thought i was looking at the dspic30f4011 chip.

So although the dspic30f4011 supports all the software side of things.

It would still need a RTL8019 chip to complete the hardware interface.

But as Paul mentioned, the micro controller may not have the resources to run the web server.

Once its reliably working, I wouldnt mind trying a surface mount version. Theres a small company up in Oregon that assembles boards. I used them for a project at my job. All they needed from me was the silkscreen. Theres a lot you can do on one of the new dspic33gp 100 pin micros.

SMD FTW..

I ordered some digikey parts (solder paste and test boards) that will arrive tomorrow, so this weekend I can test my home brew reflow oven..

Maybe we can create some sort of breakout board for the SMD micro that slots in some sort of through hole connector?

You could just use a serial port from the main controller to send data to a second controller that does the user interface - that would minimise the overhead on the main controller...
