Simple but very promising ecomod. will it work?
The 4 cylinder engine in my car currently allows it to average like 29 mpg city/hwy. engine produces 125 hp.
So I thought to myself, it shouldn't be too difficult to knock out 2 cylinders:
disconnect (#1)FUEL INJECTOR ELECTRICAL CONNECTOR and remove (#2)SPARK PLUG from #2 and #4 cylinders.
open valve cover and remove (#3)valve TAPPETS from #2 and #4 cylinders so the flow inside the intake manifold won't be disturbed.
we now have a 2 cylinder engine that should give about 60 hp...enough to drive anywhere. the o2 sensor should continue to measure out the fuel as necessary to the #1 and #3 cylinders as everything is all the same, there is just less of it. I don't believe the computer can detect how much flow there is in the exhaust pipe, it can only detect how rich or lean it is.
we will need to adjust the idle cuz the factory idle will now be a little high for only 2 cylinders.
simply unplugging fuel injector clips makes the car run lousy, but I think that is due to: 1. not removing the spark plugs, and 2. not having romoved the valve tappets on the necessary cylinder. if those valves continue to open and close, the engine wouldn't be able to run well on the other cylinders . (correct???)
good idea???
will it work???
I should be able to get around on half the fuel !! car is a manual trans too!

try it.
i think i'd leave the spark plugs attached and hooked up. the spark wants to go SOMEWHERE, and if you don't give it an easy path, it will do something not nice inside the coil/distributor.
Optionally, ground the ends of the plug wires to metal on the engine.
With the valves disabled, it should work. i'll be curious to see your results!

what type of valve actuation do you have?
If you have rockers with screw adjusters, it's pretty simple to adjust them so they don't open. If you have a shim over bucket setup, just remove the shims and buckets. It is a bit more work though.
This will leave you with a full time 2 cylinder. Probably is a good idea to leave the plugs hooked up, although I don't know if there would be a problem with all those electrons piling up in the wires.
I wonder how rough it would run?

Vibrates like hell. Keep the 4 cyl. and and cut the rpms to half peak power or near peak torque. Work on the aero mods and driving techniques.

But the idea works, as VW (and Audi) have an engine that will shut down 2 cylinders when it doesn't need their power.

I did this on my land rover discovey, 3.9lv8 engin. With 2 cylinders deactivated I (driving sensibly) I saw no difference in FE or pOwer. With 4 cylinders I saw a big jump in FE but the truck was dangerously slow and gutless. I don't remember my numbers but something like 30% better FE on highway. If I were to do it again I would have th fuel injectors on toggle switched and only switch hem off at speed. From a standstill I barely made it up a hill
Having said that I eventually started shifting the auto tranny for every gear and it became better. With a manual tranny it would be no problem.
Don't jump outany two cylinders, make sure they're even on your firing order. Say for 1-3-4-2 jump out 1&3 to keep th firing somewhat balanced.
Don worry about disconnedting the spark plugs, they don't do a thing.

I don't believe that for a second. Unless there's something special about your engine, we haven't found any econo benefit from shutting injectors off.
