BMW made 3.0L V8's and I've seen 19.0L I6 engines for mining trucks. That being said, I do love the simplicity that typically comes with fewer cylinders & fewer parts.
As you well know, number of cylinders has a lot to do with "it". Fewer cylinders are typically more thermodynamically efficient since there is less surface area per displacement. More cylinders usually results in more power for any given displacement since the RPM and compression can be increased (for gassers anyhow). As you pointed out, there is simplicity and reliability that comes from having fewer parts, too. Generally speaking, people that are cost conscious want fewer cylinders and less displacement at the sacrifice of top end power, which is rarely ever used.

Just to clarify my post, I'm merely saying that a 5.0 v8 turbo diesel, probably around 500-550lb•ft?, is a bit more than is required in a half ton. I'm only speaking to the power output.

I'd rather get the good old B5.9 straight-6 over this V8 anytime.

What I really want to see is a 4 cylinder turbo diesel in a light truck such as the Tacoma or Ridgeline.
I really don't understand why the hell Toyota doesn't offer either the 2.5L or the 3.0L D-4D engines in the Tacoma, 4Runner and the FJ Cruiser as factory options. My grandpa has a '06 Hilux with the 3.0L and its performance is not bad at all if we compare with a V6 gasser.

Well, I guess NASDAQ must be in denial as well. Here's thier list of ownership of Cummins Stock. No mention of Ford:
Cummins Inc. (CMI) Institutional Ownership & Holdings - NASDAQ.com

Additional links:

Here's a link to Cummins' 2012 annual report. There's no mention of Ford whatsoever, except as a customer:
Cummins - AnnualReports.com

Also, here's the link for the SEC filing in 1997 when Ford sold what little share it did have of Cummins:
Cummins Inc. - SEC Filings

And, as a matter of fact, I WILL tell you that "Diameler groupe doesnt own dodge outrite". According to the Wall Street Journal, Fiat owns a majority of Chrysler (of which Dodge is part):
Fiat Increases Ownership in Chrysler to 58.5% - WSJ.com
(2nd WSJ link):
Fiat's Marchionne to Pursue Full Ownership of Chrysler - WSJ.com
And according to Bloomberg:
Fiat CEO Says Chrysler Ownership Clarity in Third Quarter - Bloomberg
And according to Reuters:
Fiat CEO: plan to buy Chrysler shares | Reuters

Diamler raped chrysler, bought them, took the liquid assets and dropped them as fast as possible. Fiat owns chrysler with iirc uaw being next largest holder.

While it's a decent motor, and the 500,000 kilometer overhaul interval is nothing to sneeze at (that's approximately 300,000 miles), it's not quite as powerful as the VM Motori 2.8 in the Chevy Colorado.

Still... it's a young motor, and there's probably a lot of potential left on the table.

Hell, the Foton is an impressive pick-up consideirng its price range. For much less than the "Japanese" and "American" pickups (which are all made in Thailand), you get a fully-loaded 4x4 with that Cummins motor, Bosch injection, a Getrag box, Borg-Warner transfer case and Dana differentials. iol;

It actually drives nicely, too. Thrashed two of these suckers on the racetrack a few months back and was suitably impressed. Brakes had less fade than most, and the steering assist was suitably oversized for hard work. The hydraulic pump in the Triton overheats and cavitates if you give it too many steering inputs too fast, and the electric assist in the newer trucks isn't any better in this regard.

Maybe their interiors still need work, and maybe they should include a Lotus suspension with the rest of the third-party stuff on the truck, but Foton went overboard to make sure this truck would take the heat, and it shows.

It's an OHV layout with 2 valves per cylinder, so it would be quite predictable to have some limitations while compared to the VM Motori with its DOHC with 4 valves per cylinder arrangement. But the ISF2.8 still fares decently compared to the 2.5L VM Motori and the 2.5L D-4D from Toyota. It's also worth to note the Cummins has a very compact and light package due to its OHV layout.

Compared to the 2.5s... definitely a world of difference.

Hell, I like it better than the old 3.0 D4D... despite the lag... because it offers the same power with better economy.

The 3.0L D-4D never really impressed me.
