So they're psychic?

70 mpg? Maybe if you hypermile the hell out of it, but so far, from the numbers I've seen... no.

Don't know who fed him that number, but it's a tad optimistic. That would make it far, far more efficient than the one you guys are getting down under.

Tim has been looking at the Mirage's official fuel economy numbers in markets where it's already on sale (including Australia), then comparing them to other cars' ratings which we also have on sale in Canada/U.S. (e.g. Smart Fortwo, Toyota/Scion iQ, Chevy/Holden Spark). From that, it looks like the M irage will have an EPA combined rating around 37-38ish MPG (US) - which very possibly makes it the best or 2nd best non-hybrid here. In Australia, looks like the only non-hybrid that beats it is the Smart Fortwo (only when the Smart is equipped with start/stop).

We've got details posted in a thread on the new forum. Working on the new forum now... Still hoping to have it open this weekend or Monday at the latest.

The mirage is not yet for sale in Australia very very soon tho.
Also other country's work out there fuel economy ratings differently so this may make things interesting.

We have the Suzuki alto hare in Aus that is rated at 4.5 l/100klm verses the mirage at 4.6 l/100klm Alto | Suzuki Australia

Very much looking forward to the mirage site you are working on let us know when we can see it and join up.

I have seen reports of Cd ratings for the mirage at .28 .29 and .30 the .30 seems to be the most reffered to number. I don't know if some difference in the numbers are from some models having the little rear hatch spoiler and others not having it.

The skilled hypermiler gains the most during the slowdown procedure - not using the brakes when there is (or soon to be) a red light ahead. It's all about driving as if you're brakes don't work. Only a hybrid can partially mask the "slowing down sins".

My brother in law has a Lancer with a CVT. While it may accelerate relatively efficiently, his mileage is horrible because he accelerates until he needs to stop and then piles on the brakes.
I think we agree completely.

Any car driven by your bro in law would get bad mileage. My point is that a CVT programmed to simulate a hypermiled manual could beat a manual if both are driven normally.

And it is the normal driver, not the hypermiler that vehicles are marketed to.

Yup. I can agree with that!

Well, it still needs fleshing out & lots of tweaking, but we're declaring it open as of today:

http://www.MirageForum.com

Tim and I have started by posting lots of info we're learning about the car. It goes without saying, everybody feel free to join in.

The North American debut of the car is this Thursday in Montreal - should have all the details then. I've been in touch with Mitsu Canada, and am on their press mailing list.

(While digging for a corporate Mitsu contact, I also remembered that a high school buddy is the Canadian marketing director for the i-MiEV. But that's another story!)

I'm with the others that wish the mirage had a manual option...

Unless I lose my left leg I want to stick with a manual transmission. I learned on an automatic because nobody around me drove a manual. I wished every day to drive a manual. Fuel economy aside there are so many more benefits to owning a manual transmission.
  1. Starter failure or battery almost dead? You can bump start it and be on your way.
  2. Most people will not ask to borrow your car.
  3. Coasting or decelerating especially down a hill is completely controlled by you (auto transmission are pretty smart but are no match for a manual)
  4. It impresses girls. Especially ones that don't actually know how to drive a manual. I've been asked things like "how do you know when to shift?" and "How did you do that?" (no handbrake hill start)

Never mind that: most people will not be able to steal your car!
