It seems like insurance companies are quick to write off hybrid vehicles as a total loss for relatively minor damage. I see many reconstructed title Prii in the Portland area.
Hopefully insurance companies will be quick to write off BEVs as a total loss for relatively minor damage. That will make for some fantastic deals on a reconstructed-titled Bolt.

Interesting time as Lithium batteries have gone from an overpriced novelty item with high costs assuming required replacements to a commodity loss leader where reliability is a must and other "electronics" make the profit.
Who would have thought we would enter the world of lithium being priced like gasoline,
something to bring you to the table for other items.

I think LGchem and Panasonic make a good profit on each cell.

I think the costs of batteries have come down a lot - that is how they can sell a 60kWh car for the same price as a 24kWh car.

Do you care? All that matters to you is the price the florist charges for the arrangement. Maybe the florist sells vases below cost, and makes a profit on the flowers, or vice versa. Or maybe they're selling a loss-leader to increase business.

The article says the battery accounts for 23% of the $37,500 MSRP. That works out to about $8,600. If GM isn't turning a healthy profit from the remaining $29,000, they are doing something wrong. Electric motors are cheaper than internal combustion engines, and are a simpler drive train. Everything about an EV is simpler than the ICE counterpart, with exception to refueling.
I'd say the vehicle is priced a little high still, considering $29,000 will buy a bigger, more equipped conventional vehicle.
