It's sort of simple in my mind. Most vehicles start to have problems at 150,000-200,000 bad ones even sooner around 100,000 miles. So on a turbo, you just have all the normal problems but then add in $1000-$3000 turbochargers, down pipes, intercooler, etc. You still get all the other stuff as well, water pumps, timing chains, fuel injectors, alternators, A/C, headgaskets, etc.
If you don't have it it can't break.

They're usually much more sensible to the usage of some lower-grade oil than a naturally-aspirated counterpart too.

True but how much fuel did you save in that first 150K miles of driving? (Assuming the turbo's only last 150K)

Another factor is that few new car buyers still have the vehicle at 150K miles. Someone buying a new car doesn't care how much it cost the 2nd, 3rd, or 4th owner to fix.

As a used car buyer I try to convince new car buyers to buy the kinds of cars I will want in the future. But for some reason it isn't working.

Even people who ask me for advice before buying a new car, often go for some version with an engine I told them to avoid.

Many folks enjoy being made a fool by advertisers and sellers promising some miraculous performance and fuel-efficiency, eventually neglecting how it may result in a quite maintenance-intensive engine.

Me too. And searching for junkyard parts to "fix" other people's "mistakes" when they bought a car while it was new is becoming harder too

But Toyota 1st time buyers pay those Toyota premium initial purchase prices because the resale is good to the 2nd or 3rd owners. If they are no more reliable than a F150 3.5 EcoBoost (which isn't in the upper 50% of full size pickups) then it may not happen in 5 years but those chickens will come home to roost. The resale will tank and then even if they figure it all out Toyota have to live with "Ford reliability" for a decade or more after the mistake is made. Honda has lost their reputation, Toyota is the last bastion of quality out there. Playing with turbos on the bread and butter at this point is a bad idea IMO.

And if the EcoBoost is any guide the owners save nothing in real world driving. If anything they play with that boost way to often and end up with much worse economy compared to a V8.

How crazy is it to think that Toyota will probably never build a V8 again. Man, that blows my mind. The end of an era.

Hehe.

When my daughter was born, she'd sneeze and I'd think "her first sneeze". Shortly after, I began thinking that one day will be the last I kayak, or the last day I do a pull-up, or take a step, or take a breath.

The ends make room for the beginnings.
