I'd really like a pair of all terrains. Some are almost good as some mud terrains, yet they work well on the highway. and I can pump lots of air into them, and deflate them to a really low psi as well for rocky terrain. Too bad I just have all-seasons

If you are thinking of putting a limited slip in to help with icy roads. I can tell you don't even think of going all out and putting a detroit locker in there instead. My CJ has lockers in both ends and it was nearly impossible to keep it out of the ditch or off the guard rail. This was with 35x12.50 mud king tires and driving very carefully.

A locker is just way to rough on light snow and totally dangerous on ice. If there was more than 2-3ft of snow it was pretty fun though But then again I have driven a camaro with wrinkle wall tires in 6 inches of snow and that was really fun

What I do now is keep a set of cable type tire chains in my metro in the winter and it can go anywhere I need it to go. A good set of chains on a 2wd can take you farther than a 4wd with normal all terrain tires ever could. But you can take them off when not needed.

Yes, but those are illegal in the wonderful state of IL. Everything is illegal here. go 20 miles east, and IN has half the road rules we have.

I don't think I'm gonna go all out anytime soon. I don't think I'm swappin diffs either. tires are probably the easiest legal thing.

Illinois - Permissible when required for safety because of snow, rain or other conditions which may cause a vehicle to skid. For more information, see Illinois compiled statutes, transportation, chapter 625 vehicles, 625 ILCS 5/ Illinois vehicle code, chapter 12 equipment of vehicles, article IV tires, section 12-401 restriction as to tire equipment.

They are way cheaper than new tires even I always tell people chains are great. Just take a bit of time practicing how to put them on and you are set.

The one time I ever found myself in the ditch, one guy stoped and he had a chain that we put on only one tire. Car drove staight out of the ditch with a little pushing by a couple of guys. I was blown away how effective the chain was.

Is that the old laws? cause I swear they are illegal on highway roads. new laws have been put in effect January 2008. rural roads I know they aren't. but I know people who have gotten pulled over and ticketed for having chains, but I don't know. where can I buy a set of these things?

No idea if they are old or new. That page the quote was from has a link to the state dmv rules and they should have the new laws.

Here is the current website listing:
http://www.ilga.gov/legislation/ilcs...ehicle+Code%2E
Quote:
Nothing in this Section shall be deemed to prohibit the use of tire chains of reasonable proportion upon any vehicle when required for safety because of snow, ice or other conditions tending to cause a vehicle to skid.
(Source: P.A. 94‑619, eff. 1‑1‑06.)

So if you are within the rated speed of the chains ~25-35mph and there is snow on the ground you won't get a ticket.

I got my cable type chains at walmart. Prob be able to get them at any auto parts store as well, they might have to order them for you though.
