ok, enough of that.

So .......
----------------1957--------------2002
Manufqcture------MG------------=-=-infiniti (my stock Q45)
engine ----------1.5liter------------- 4.5liter
---------------90 cubic inches----------274 cubic inches
HP-------------290 (raw)---------------- 340 (qouted)

hp/liter ------------193------------------ 75
hp/inches----------- 3.22----------------- 1.24

In the US, the standard to beat for highperformance was 1hp for each inch.

I would say you brits were making that little MG engine SCREEAAMMMMM!!!!!!
Well, one, it was supercharged. And two, hp/Liter is really a quite silly figure to worry about. It reallly only matters when you are comparing two engines of very similar displacement. For example, I can go to my local hobby store and pick up an engine that produces 750hp/Liter (12.1hp/ci). They have it sitting on the shelf. For about a hundred bucks. Don't plan on swapping one into your Q45 though.

A better example might be the new ZX10R. 998cc rated at 207hp. 207hp/Liter, naturally aspirated on regular gasoline.

The GT-40 has lots of scoops and such because the air was needed for specific purposes. The large opening in the center front was for radiator air. The two smaller ones were for brake cooling air. The one in the middle of the front lid was radiator air exhaust. The ones on the "hips" I think were for rear brake or possibly transmission cooling. The ones above the middle/rear of the car on the top were induction air. And so on.

If they didn't need to use the air, chances are they wouldn't have openings for it.

I have always wonder on the daytona coupe about the big scope that is 'air in' at the bottom and then 'air uot' on the hood.
My thought was that to keep it from getting airborn, the air coming uot the hood is actually pushing down on the top of the car as it moves back.

just my opinion...

Back on mcrews original subject, consider this:

On the Mulsanne Straight (back in the 60s before they put in the chicanes to slow it down) at Lemans (longest straightaway in racing other than Bonneville) the Shelby Daytona Coupe powered by a carbureted 289 would overtake and pass the GT40 powered by a 427. Oh! And it would do the same to the Ferrari.

That says volumes about the aerodynamic excellence over the Shelby Daytona Coupe. We’re talking speeds well in excess of 200 MPH.

It does produce front downforce, that is certain! It also gives a good way for the engine cooling air to exit the engine bay. They made that airway serve multiple purposes, or perhaps it's fair to say that they took a necessary feature (radiator air outlet) and turned it into a positive (downforce).

Big Dave,
in my younger days I was a card carrying member of the Shelby Car Club of America (as opposed to a 'car driving' member)

I'll never forget seeing my first coupe....... I'm just staring....... the owner, old guy......says "it was for the wooosies vwho didn't want to get wet"
I found the comment hilariuos!!!!!! He said "it's ugly....but it runs".
then he said the same thing you posted.
