It would take an especially good deal to get me into new, but at the moment they may be offering that It also kills off the Mrs A "don't get anything too old" argument...

Skoda Fabia gril cover mod

Hello!

Well, I made a similar mod to my Skoda Octavia 1.9 TDI, covering completely my grill, but a space for the bonnet opening clip. You left an entrance for the air input of the car, in the very same place I have it.

My question is if I can improve my cover with an air opening too.
I have driven with my car until 30 degrees centigrades and engine temp had never went high. It keeps always at the same level. The vent had never start also. Now, in winter, the level is the same. This makes me come to the conclusion that the 1.9 TDI engine is overcooled, and the mod is very convenient.

I think I will try an opening for the air intake as you did. This should improve air cooling of the air intake, though worsening aero.

Another improvement of yr cover over mine is that you cover the bonnet opening clip with the help of a tape.

I donīt know how to attach the picture of my grill cover for you to see. Send me an email where I can send it to you.

Opening on air intake pre-filter

B is the opening to the inlet - note that it faces away from the flow. D is air actually entering the engine. From this no adaption of the intake will increase flow as it depends on extracting what is needed from the flow of air to under the bonnet, not from that flow being assisted from airflow to the front of the car. Of course I blocked A so anything into my engine went from C - and still does maybe.

I have no idea how those people who have PD160 intakes ever expect to see a gain but I think I can see how the Autospeed Roomster didn't see a gain - unless I missed something in those articles.

On a happier note - this looks a good tank, maybe an EM catching one
I think opening on the rear of airintake pre-filter rear wall is a water trap and a debris trap for protecting air intake quality.

Thanks! That could be the strange design reason.

You have obviously seen the remainder of my pictures. You can attach them in one of two ways - firstly directly to the post, if you have enough posts done, or by adding them to an album which makes them visible to all. Go to your user CP, and there is an entry for Albums. Make a new one and add your pictures to it.

When posting you can then use the picture button (the yellow box with a circle and triangles representing mountains and the sun ) and put in the URL location. This is the entry in your address bar when you are viewing the full picture. If it is too big the board resizes it for you.

You may wish to remove your reg number from any photos.

Cooling temps have not moved with either the tape block or the plastic one. They have also not moved since I put in the "shelf". And Intake temps have not moved down since I opened the plastic cover at all. The conclusion seems to be that the temp sensor that the SG2 uses is down-wind of the turbo so the temps rise and fall when the engine is worked. Normally it sits at 25 Deg C all the time, sometimes moving to 35 if I give it the beans.

I may be moving to an Octavia myself (Mrs A's 2006 model, 2.0 TDI) so I would be interested in any improvements you have seen.

Hi OB,

Maybe a simpler method. Click on your picture so it shows full size - like this link.

Then right-click on the image and select "Copy Image Location" from the menu if you are using Firefox. If you are using Internet Explorer you have to right-click and select properties. Then in the window that appears about halfway down is an entry called Address (URL). Right click on that and choose "Select All" and then right click again on the highlighted part and select "Copy" from the menu, and then OK.

Why oh why does IE make this harder, no idea. Install Firefox

Then in your reply type

"[IMG]" (without the "s)

Then press Ctrl + V to paste the location copied.

Then afterwards type "[/IMG]"

The result looks like :

Quote:
[IMG*]http://ecomodder.com/forum/member-oldbeaver-albums-pictures-skoda-octavia-1-9-tdi-picture2984-skodagrillcover.jpg[/IMG*]
(ignore the *s - I had to add those so you could see the text) - Click on Preview and image comes out :

Your Octavia is exactly like the Mrs A-mobile but a different colour, I assume since you tapped its the 1.9 it has the 105 engine, which is very good for FE - my dad had one and got 60MPG (imp) without really trying. he has a 1.6 CR one now and claims 70.

And that grill block is very very tidy. Do you / would you consider making a template if I end up keeping Mrs A's car when the Prius arrives ? What is holding the rear of the screws and what is the material ?

And a quick mileage PS - Helga managed 58 on the uphill to work this morning, but only 55 on the downhill back home trip - the latter interrupted by an accident holding up traffic.

She did manage 102.3 average MPG taking A-junior to cub scouts which is also downhill

Skoda grill cover and mpg

Dear Arragonis and the forum,

Yes, I may make a template in paper or in plastic for you if you want.

I used a coarse plastic that I run into somewhere just by chance. Donīt know what it is for, originally.

I would like to ask what miles are the imperial and the american miles.

From the best of my knowledge, american miles are these with 1609 m of longitud. Imperial miles I donīt know. I am using american and suppose all are using that in ecomodder?

I know another mile which we use here in the marine, which is 1850 m long. Imperial mile should be shorter than american and a lot shorter than marine.

It is important for me to know as for comparison, to check if my car is performing as it is supposed to.

Come later for you again.

Best,

OldBeaver

PD. tks for the image advice. I will try.

Hi OB,

AFAIK the miles are the same between Imperial and US.

1 miles = 1,609.344 metres

It is the Gallon that is different.

1 litre = 0.264172052 US gallons
1 US gallon = 3.78541178 litres

1 litre = 0.219969157 Imperial gallons
1 Imperial gallon = 4.54609188 litres

The site uses US gallons in MPG.

If you google "l/100km to us mpg" there are quite a few converters.
