Auto Questions

I've just swapped to an Auto (I know, I know ) and have a question. I've read threads on swapping to N to coast when moving and the advice is to check the manual.

I have checked mine and it states that when towing the selector should be in N and that towing should be at under 50 km/h and for no more than 50 km due to gearbox lubrication.

How are auto boxes lubricated, by the engine when it is running ? If so can I coast at higher speeds assuming the engine is left on (for PAS, ABS etc. it would be).

mmmm. Maybe wise to limit your EOC coasts to 50 miles max apiece

!997 Toyota Avalon V6 w/ auto 217,000 did a fair amount of engine on in N. helped mpg, never had a problem w/ tranny
2002 Infiniti Q45 V8 w/ auto 270k miles did engine on in N a lot. Really helped mpg, never had a problem w/ tranny.
2006 Kia Sportage V6 FWD, w/ auto, do a lot of enigine on coasting in N and it helps mpg. no problem w/ tranny.
as a note: Ford Taurus does NOT lower the rpms in Neutral so that car showed no improved mpg

Excellent, will do some experiments at lower speeds and queues. Shifting to N at stops cuts the GPH by 50% at idle. At longer stops I shut the engine off assuming the turbo has not been running a lot.

From my understanding of the way American, rear drive platform, transmissions work is that as long as the engine is spinning, the trans is being lubricated because the pump is turned by the torque converter. Whether you are in drive or neutral the pump still pumps. Once the engine is off (during EOC, perhaps) the pump no longer pumps fluid around to lube the trans components and once the trans fluid film on them heats up too much or wears off, you start to get accelerated wear (my guess is Audi did the math and figured out that the trans will OK assuming your stay below 50km/h for no more than 50km). Considering your wagon has a turbo, I wouldn't even consider multiple shut down driving... unless you want to ruin your turbo... so that the wife is more OK with you buying a bigger one
