Tranny and motor together!
More progress!
I went to see the machinist - we cut off the tailshaft, he had the weld done on the coupler, and had made the spacers.
We put the spacers on the motor.
Then attached the doubled adapter plate.
And attached the part one of the coupler.
We set the transmission up on top
A few of the bolt holes had to be reamed out to line up perfect.
We ran bolts, washers, and lock washers through, and then laid it down on the floor.
I checked the electric connections and hooked up a 12V jumpstarter.
Peep the video:
Yep, sounds a little loud to me too. Guess that's what I get for having it in gear with no transmission lubricant.
Now, if I can just weld/repair the control arm mount, I can get the motor/tranny mounted.
I did get an e-mail back from that battery lead. It looks like I will be able to get as many as I can carry for not that much over the recycling value. Hope to go get some in the next few days!
More later!

Great progress so far! Make sure you use "Synchromesh" in that trans after it's installed in the car. Have you decided on how you are going to fix that frame or who is going to repair it?

Very exciting on all fronts.
It's really hard to tell from YouTube audio, but it sounds like something is still rubbing a little in the motor.

Fellow Ecomodder Doax said he would give me a hand with the welding, but we haven't had a chance to get together yet.

1000th post!? Do I win a complete set of batteries for an electric car?
I do!?!
That's wonderful!
Ok, so the batteries were NOT from Ecomodder.com, rather, I was able to purchase a dozen batteries for a mere $12 each from an electric vehicle dealer.
These are 100 Ah, 12V, gel batteries and weigh 77 lbs each.
They were pulled out of new vehicles that were being upgraded to other batteries. The worst that I could say about them is that they have been sitting around for a year. They all have good voltages.
Here's the close-up.
I have some photos of the various vehicles at the dealership as well.

Wow! Nice find. I sure hope they're in good shape. They've likely suffered some sulfation from sitting that long - I would definitely get them on a charger ASAP. One thing I don't know much about is proper care & feeding of gel batts. Charging is different, I know that.

That is awesome! Now we just need to find room in the Metro for them all.

LOL! -
I was just cleaning up around my battery area and realized that those scrap bits of styrofoam I used as spacers around the batteries for transporting them were actually packaging from the boxes the batteries came in originally.
The foam is the exact length and width as the batteries!
FREE, PRE-MADE BATTERY TEMPLATES!
EDIT:
I actually have exactly enough of them, that if I stack them all up, they equal the HEIGHT of one of the batteries as well!

8/10/08 Controller Bench Testing
I hooked up the 400 amp Curtis controller I bought off Ebay to four of the gel cell batteries.
It took a little bit of work to do, because I had to drill out some of the cable terminals to fit the posts of the batteries and motor, to hook it all up.
Then, once I hooked it all up, I realized I had it wrong and had to re-wire it!
I pulled the twist throttle off the motorcycle and hooked it up to the two connector pins on the controller.
Check out the controller-bench-test spin-up.
I also picked up a big smart charger which has a "gel" setting on it. It also has a "desulfate" feature which might be good to have with this batch of batteries.
The first battery I tried charging had the lowest voltage on it. The charger ran the "desulfate" feature and then blinked, indicating it didn't work so well.
Then I ran the charger on the next battery, with a better voltage, and it worked great, charging the battery very quickly. Another neat feature on the charger is that it tells your battery state-of charge too!
I will run the charger on the other batteries and see which ones pass muster.
