It's not a coincidence, it happened here after September 11th too. Same sudden lack of air travel, same lack of contrails and clouds.

There was a great article back then with some satellite photos that showed one lone plane in the sky. It left contrails, which over the next couple shots turned the whole area cloudy.

As I recall, after September 11th, scientists were askew to determine the effect that air traffic had on weather. I believe that I asked about it, but we now have four threads about the pandemic? I still have not tracked down my post mentioning someone on Imgur describing that the director General of the Who got his position thanks to the Chinese and seemingly to return the favor he repeated their talking points during the early stages of TPgate.

It's the city dwellers that notice the improvements in visibility. I notice no such differences since Oregon doesn't suffer visual impairments due to pollution. The main thing that limits visibility besides fog and rain would be dust from dry summer days.

I have to say, this is the only time I've not dreaded PDX traffic. Normally anxiety builds, and upon arriving at my destination I need a good 40min of quietness to recover from my frustration of having spent the last 90 minutes in a car traveling slower than had I been on a bicycle.

The air has been clear every day since I moved to Show Low, despite wood stoves and huge pickups with black exhaust.

Those just did not seem common in the Phoenix area.

I only know about two. Maybe if September the 11th had lasted for months instead of one day....

You rely on Imgur as a primary source? It's common knowledge that Tedros is asshoe.

This, the long one, and two Cofve threads.

What do you guys think?
Was the WHO influenced by China? RedDevil said that it didn't matter who who was responsible.
Fat Charlie said that everybody wants to convince everyone that it was someone else's fault so they don't get blamed.
JSH summarized the White House's talking points.

It seemed like everyone moved on after that.

I've posted it here before, but I hadn't come across this particular article.

The Contrail Effect

Quote:
For the first time since the jet age began, virtually all aircraft were grounded over the United States for three days. Even as they tried like the rest of us to absorb the enormity of the terrorist attacks, climatologists realized they had an unprecedented opportunity to scrutinize individual contrails, and several studies were quickly launched.

One study looked at the aforementioned contrails that grew to cover 7,700 square miles. Those condensation trails arose in the wake of six military aircraft flying between Virginia and Pennsylvania on September 12, 2001.
They've moved on to study the effects of cloud coverage on temperatures. Take it or leave it, but it's pretty well established that planes create cloud cover.

The amenities in parks are off limits (eg. playground equipment, gazebos, picnic tables), but all pathways remain open and local health officials are encouraging people to use them.

My routine hasn't changed much (have been WFH for decades, and am mostly retired anyway), but I've added more walking anyway.
Same here. I'm seeing 3-4 times the number of people walking or running around our neighborhood.

Including me. I used to walk at work during lunch but now my wife and I are running or walking twice a day just to get some exercise. The downside is at work I walk about 8K steps a day even without the lunch walk. At home that drops to about 800. Net effect is I walk less working from home.

Portland certainly does. There are plenty of days that visibility is poor due to pollution. Fly into PDX and you can see a brown layer over the city.
