My ranger had 107K on the factory original wires. I developed a problem of a misfire when wet out[or even moist] 2 of the wires had weak spots, and would cross fire with each other. Well I was at Summit racing last month, they had a sale, and i bought a pair of JBA 9mm wires for 50 bucks, motorcraft[from jobbers or ford w/discount] was 45, and the mid grade auto zone was 40. So far i like these wires.
Don't know if that even helped

On my sportage, I had two sets of Bosch platinum plugs go bad; one right after the other. I don't know what the cause was but I remedied the problem by installing economy wires from Auto Zone and Bosch Super Plus (copper) plugs. It's been well over a year now with no problems.

...for what it's worth.

...think about the "military" vehicles where "shielded" plug wires are used for EMI / RFI (don't want ignition 'noise' getting into sensitive electronics nor becoming a "signal" for homing-missiles and rockets---ka-BOOM!) and water-proofing (all-weather and fording operations).

...often special spark plugs are required having "treaded" plug-wire connections and O-ring gaskets for water-proofing.

...Iridium plugs do LAST a long time, but aren't as "conductive" as old-fashioned copper-core; and their "tips" are very brittle and subject to "breaking off" during "gapping" if not done very carefully.

Talking 98 Durango

i got a 98 durango with the 318CI magnum engine, 4wd, 4 speed tranny. before the face-lift, i was getting 14 mpg on the freeway, what i did was changed the spark plugs with Bosch Platinum +4, Bosch Wireset, changed the oil with plain 10w-30 autozone brand oil with a Bosch oil filter. Fram 12,000 mile air filter, autozone transmission filter, autozone brand ATF. Also Bosch Cap and Rotor.

That being said, i have boosted my mpg from 14 to 21, also, everything minus the A/C compressor has 271,000 miles. Once you go bosch you never go back! i change my engine oil every 3,000 miles to the T. air filter gets changed also at 3000 miles (can never keep enough dirt out of your engine), and i rotate my tires every oil change to keep the tread completely even.

Been a Mechanic for 8 years now, and weather you belive me or not, 271000 miles of brutal teenage hot-rodding will disprove you!

Bosch Platinum +4 are a very bad choice

most people know better now
but
in the not distant past , DIY installation of Bosch Platinum +4 spark plugs was / is a very common cause of MISFIRE related DTCs in customer cars

never use them
there is no car manufacturer that recommends them
they are shipped preset with the wrong gap and the gap is not adjustable

use only the OEM recommended spark plug brand and part number for best results

Never noticed a difference with any type of plug. When it's time to replace, give me the cheap old style. Plug wires only get replaced if they're known to be bad. Don't like replacing the cap and rotor either. A razor blade to knock off the deposits works fine for me.

The Owner's Manual says the gap is noted on a decal in the engine compartment.
The gap is also cited in the Owners Manual as .052-.056

Its a self indexing plug, gives you the absolute best burn because the spark hits where its needed, you are right tho, they usually are the wrong gap, but for the last 60k miles, I've never had a problem, and just did a similar tune up to my 01 grand am, and Its averaging 35-38 mpg. Thats 10-13 above the gov rating, they do help mpg alot. Just saying between the 5 vehicles in my fam that I up keep, and the 390 miles driven daily between us, never had engine trouble. Facts speak louder than books.

your results are not typical -

i fix broken cars
do a lot of misfire related testing , i have never seen Bosch platinum +4 s installed in a car that functions as claimed by bosch
and
this is all over the forums - join IATn and read in the archives

so for your claims and alleged results
you are unique

the rest of the mortals that drive cars should NEVER use Bosch Platinum+4s imho , they should use the OEM recommended spark plug for best results and the least problems with misfires and subsequent cat failures
