And if bringing collisions with larger vehicles into the equation, a full 23% of multi-vehicle collision fatalities were passenger car vs large truck, in which case splitting hairs of hatchback vs sedan ain't gonna make much difference. The SUV driver who thinks big n heavy = safe needs to remember that he's twice as likely to die in a rollover accident as a passenger car driver.

So that means that you don't need to change the oil?
It sounds too good to be true. Or did you forget to mention oil changes?

While going up to a larger car or an SUV has a huge effect on gas burned and operator complacency, at the end of the day you're just another light vehicle with a slightly different deck chair arrangement.

First according to IIHS in new to 3 year old pickups and SUV s you are actually less likely to die in a rollover crash then in a car. You may be more likely to roll over but those rollovers result in less deaths overall then car rollovers. And 69% of all rollover deaths are not wearing seatbelts.
You can say it's splitting hairs to talk weight, but so is using rollover data. If you just look at the odds of dying and not the reason, it is clear you are many times more likely to die in a small car then a large car or truck.

Overall I personally agree, hatchbacks (as well as all other cars) are plenty safe. I just think the ratings are misleading. Overall I think way to much is actually put into car safety. If you just remove all the dumb actions, speeding, no seat belts, driving impaired, etc. You are very unlikely to die in a car crash period.

I don't know anything about the other cars suggested. But I really, really like the Focus I just got. Nice little car, does what I want it to do and the mileage is just stupid good. Way better than the EPA rating and I'm not even driving it that well. I think there is 40mpg in it with a tire pressure mod and a partial grill block off.

Hey Guys!!! I ended up buying a used 2008 prius with only 38,000 miles on it from a local toyota dealership. And it was in my price range! Thanks for all the advice!
