Darin, I have been looking up around Northern New York for a Prius. I found this one, it appears to be nice and reasonable!
Toyota Prius Hybrid Electric
It is decent distance away, I'm unsure how you feel about travelling.

Ooo, that first one (2001 for $2525) looks OK. But I notice they didn't list the odometer.
But I arbitrarily decided to restrict my Cheap / Reasonably Affordable Prospective Prius Radius (aka C.R.A.P. Prius Radius) to ~2 hours driving time *.
(* Exceptions may be made under exceptional circumstances.)
Sorry War_Wagon: as tempting as your rust-free, low-km, in-need-of-a-jump-start example is, it's a little outside the radius.

I would definitely try to get a Gen2. A Gen1 wouldn't be a bad project/beater to drive into the ground, but I think you're correct in your assessment that you wouldn't be able to break even. Also, hatchback>sedan.
What I like about the Prius is I can squeeze mid-50s out of it without trying too hard and my wife will still get at least high 40s when she drives it.

after this post I must say I was starting to consider one. here they only started selling them in 2005 so I think its the 2nd generation. I can get a 2007 model with 80k miles on the clock for around $ 5400 USD converted which is well in my budget for a new car. hhmmmm?

Eddie25, I'd say go try one - they're very interesting machines if you like playing the fuel economy game.

2005, $3900, inspected
345,000 km / 214k miles.
This one's also outside my C.R.A.P. Prius Radius, but I'm posting just to remind myself that another deal will eventually come up closer to home.
It has the mandatory Ontario mechanical inspection already done (required on ownership transfers of any used car to be kept on the road), which makes it worth a little more.

Safetied. Does not need e-test. (Hyrbids are exempt from e-tests).
Reliable. Owned two years with no major issues. Brakes were done last year. New battery. Runs well. Great on gas. AC blows cold. Remote start.
Firm price

What about a 2nd-hand import from Japan? Used cars from Japan tend to be well-maintened (presumably better than what you're going to find locally) and cheap. No wonder they sell like hot cakes in Chile and Paraguay despite the cost of converting them to LHD...

getting eager to sell?
A 2004 with 200k kms (120k mi.) that's within my C.R.A.P. Prius Radius has been advertised at various (somewhat high) prices for one month now: $5500-$6k. It's not pristine cosmetically, and the ad doesn't offer the mechanical inspection certificate.
I was in touch with them via email to ask if their price was negotiable. They said "yes", but I didn't respond (because I'm too nice to lowball at 2/3 of their asking price.)
But they re-listed today with "please contact" instead of a price. And they also say they need to sell before moving out west. So I contacted them again. Lowball offer imminent? We'll see.
