I LOL at guys that start foaming at the mouth when they talk about putting huge V8s into little micro cars like Nash Metros and the like. I'd wager most of the time the chassis isn't up to it- poor CG, too narrow, too short, too high, just... wrongness on many levels. The result is worthless junk eye candy that you can in no way, shape, or form ever hope to go WOT and actually be able to use all the available power; likely balance is so shot not even a fraction of the power is useable.

However I did like Zingers when I was a kid.

I had a vega wagon w/a v6, swapped the auto for a t5. It was neither fast nor did it get good mpg by my standards, nor was it fun to drive.

The world switched over to fuel injection long ago, and I would leave the tdi in the VW because it handles about 1,000,000 times better.

I would take a saturn/honda/toyota/??? 5 speed over a v6/v8 vega anyday, or over any vega/chevette.

I'm not espousing it, Frank, just playing "what if" with it.

The new 4-banger into the Vega is, however, not a dreadful idea. It's a significant power increase but not the order of magnitude the Big Block Chevette has to contend with. It would probably do with some chassis reinforcement - indeed, with a Vega that might be mandatory in any case - but nothing too crazy.

I'm not pointing at any particular individual either. I hear/see it all the time. Car shows and cruise nights are the worst. Some guy will find/buy what could be a neat little driver and within minutes the crowd is putting imaginary big blocks in it, thus destroying all utility.

Said the last one would be the last one, but this would probably bolt in. Take the Isuzu Impulse RWD turbo engine and 5 speed, add a Megasquirt and a few modern upgrades ( like a DIS system using some GM LS coils, a header, a more modern turbo from something somewhere, a proper header ( coated of course ) tuned to make the time that the engine is in N/A mode better, and gear the thing for the moon. Maybe make a cam for more bottom end torque, or get an adjustable pulley and move the cam timing around for max cylinder pressure. Then tune, tune, tune. Throw every ecomodder trick at it. Water/meth injection. Ceramic wheel bearings.

By faster, I wasn't really planning on putting a V8 in there. What's the point of that? I just thought someone might have an idea for an engine that was maybe more efficient and more powerful, and there are a couple good ideas.

Would be quick in a light car like that, with the cam timing and careful mapping it would mpg well too.
I particularly like that one. That sounds good.

I also like the 2.2 EcoTec out of an S10, that sounds fair as well. That was more what I was planning on seeing from ecomodders, not 800hp monsters hahaha.

How much you want to spend, go cheap find a s-10 4 or 2.8v6 w/carb with 5pd or 700r4auto matching what's in the car.

Go green, get a 2.2 form 1999 or 2000 area s-10 that's FFV and burn 15% petrol 85% renewable. Find a whole truck and swap it all.

Is any of this gonna happen anyway?

Put a cam, carb, and header on the stocker to wake it up- cheap and easy.

The S10 never used the Ecotec, altough some Brazilian versions had that C-series Opel engine instead of the Vortec 2200 which was based in the same 122cu.in. OHV used in the Cavalier.
