I think population contraction and economic contraction go hand in hand. It'll happen.

https://duckduckgo.com/?q=degrowth is the term of art.

China is also trialing your social scoring system.

I think the solution to energy problems is to push them down to the meso- or nanoscale. Too small to meter.

The department of labor is saying that by 2030 half of workers are going to be self employed.
I don't know how that is going to work.

It means half of all employers avoiding providing health benefits, withholding taxes, and paying Social Security.

I can see why that appeals to employers.

The 2 big ones are heath insurance and minimum wage.
Now the bourgeoisie have reacted by eliminating more jobs faster with tech, automation and subing every possible little thing out.

Mother Nature has a habit of "population contraction" all by herself: famine, pestilence, drought, weather and wars

As far as electrical power is concerned, as long as people want to charge their devices there will be a need for power. Electric vehicles that claim “ZEV” are only moving the carbon footprint elsewhere.
Coal is dead, it may come back some day when people need to charge their devices.
Hydro still exists but it is killing the fishies. In the southwest US we are also running out of water for hydro electric generation. Look at the water levels in Lake Mead and Lake Powell. That is OK when people need to charge their devices.
Nuclear is OK but we are creating an enormous amount of radioactive waste that needs to be disposed of “somewhere”. That is OK when people need to charge their devices.
Solar and Wind are OK but very peaky and not always available when needed. Nuclear, coal and natural gas power plants may be needed to fill the need for power. That is OK when people need to charge their devices.
I do not doubt that the climate is changing. I have been around a while and remember when expert climate scientists proclaimed we were all going to freeze to death soon.

Maybe we tried too hard back then and caused global climate change to go the other way?
Enjoy your discussions. When one of you comes up with the solution let us all know. In the interim, that is OK when people need to charge their devices.
The old Time magazine cover is not real. It was faked. So, that is not science.

Yep, and what's more--the cover they photoshopped to make the fake 1977 issue is from April 2007:

Lol, we're totally screwed.

Someday it will be no problem at all to produce fake video evidence of someone doing, or not doing something. We can implicate someone in a crime with false video or photographic evidence, or exonerate a person with the same methods.

Perhaps sophisticated algorithms will be developed to spot fakes in a criminal case, but the internet stands no chance of knowing what is true and what is fake.
