The singular advantage of the metric system is you can convert by shifting the decimal point, so 0.44 meters.

A meter is ~1.1 yards so 0.44X39.6, which I can't do in my head so about/less than half of forty.

You mean trying to figure 17' 3" 1/16th minus 3' 10" 3/32nd in your head isn't the most efficient system in the world? I'd be surprised if a board were ever cut incorrectly due to our superior unit of measure.

Thousandth of an inch
A thousandth of an inch is a derived unit of length in a system of units using inches. Equal to 1⁄1000 of an inch, a thousandth is commonly called a thou or particularly in North America a mil. The words are shortened forms of the English and Latin words for "thousand". Wikipedia

I hear a thousandth of an inch being called a "mil" all the time. Actually I don't know of anyone who still says "thousandths of an inch."

I've heard that too.

Gas is 4 dollars, 99 cents and 9 mils. (Less than $5, so it must be cheap)
