A properly designed and built home would get it's heat and air conditioning direct from Outer Space, it's electricity from the wind and water from the air. And according to Fuller, cost no more than a new car.

The presumption is that mass production reduces the cost per unit.

If they built your new car in your driveway it would cost as much as a house does now.

Build or assemble?. I can see building from raw materials costing a half million, but not just dropping parts premade. Now neighbor down street and around corner has a 1.2million house would his car cost more?

I should have found the Buckminster Fuller quote, but it was from the 1920s, most likely in 4D Timelock. He was comparing the weights of houses as well.

Those are some big numbers, I was thinking $40-120K. Build cost not speculative real estate price.

You can assemble a kit car in your driveway today and (possibly) save money. Speedway Ts and Cobra replicas.

Home building is a silly, silly process. Absolutely everything is custom made.

Why are windows custom made rather than standard sizes? Cabinets? Heck, the roof is bespoke. You can't even put crummy asphalt shingles on a roof without custom fitting it. The whole thing is dumb.

Engineered roofing trusses are the worst.

In the 1980s I was building clear-span 40ft shells to 1/32" tolerance, deliverable in a box van. In the 2010s I was an estimator for a roofing truss company. They liked telescoping gables and complex ridgelines. The same floor plan would sell for more if the roof was more complicated. The delivery truck had to beware sharp corners and bridges.

And the gable ends are a structural point of failure from wind loads.

I mean, a square is the simplest and most efficient shape to build. A sphere being the most volume per surface area and a naturally resilient shape. Don't know why square houses with simple roofs aren't common? Avoid valleys and you avoid most roof problems.

I always wonder what prepending "I mean," signifies. Glen Greenwald does it consistently.

There is a tyranny to dimensional materials. 4x8 sheet, ima looking at you. Geopolymers come in a bucket.

Here's an [edge zenith] hemisphere inside a square:
