Well one down side for most humans to consume acorn coffee .. or even acorns in general .. unlike conventional coffee .. straight off the tree the acorns have bitter tasting tannin compounds.

Traditionally for acorn consumption removing the bitter tannins can be done with steaming or boiling the acorns .. which to eat acorns as a nut is fine.

For coffee the cook via roasted flavor is proffered to steam or boil flavor .. soo for coffee it takes a bit more care/effort .. starting with the Good Summary of basic method .. for coffee the balance at the end part 5 & 6 that become important .. enough of 5 hot water to remove bitter tannins but leaving the 'cooking' of the nut to the step 6 for roasting.

Just like not everyone likes every type of coffee .. dark roast , light roast , vacuum press, pucks , instant , cream , sugar, etc .. before investing your time to try and make your 1st batch of home made acorn coffee .. it might be best to try the flavor of 1 professionally made bags (like in the previous link) 1st .. or just stick with conventional coffee (if it aint broke don't fix it).

Wasn't aware acorns have caffeine in them, the real reason I drink coffee. Mountain Dew and Coke just don't appeal to me first thing at 4:30 am. I also don't drink tea since the caffeine influx is muted and I like the slap in the face effect of coffee.

Acorn coffee does not contain any caffeine which means you can drink more than one cup. Acorns contain vitamins B, B6, copper, potassium, manganese, phosphorus and of course magnesium

If it's just caffeine itself you want .. and not the coffee itself .. it might be cheaper to just caffeinated tap water .. or .. you could cafeinate any beverage you like .. you could just get some of those caffeine additives .. put as much or as little caffeine as you like in any beverage you like (too much can kill you).

I've seen all sorts of ridiculous caffeine products lately. Caffeinated soap? Caffeinated shaving cream? I wonder if anyone makes caffeinated socks, to dose throughout the day.

Well AFAIK, caffeine is like nicotine in that small amounts are tolerable so either the socks need just a wee dose, or your heart implodes.

The thing is:I LIKE COFFEE. The effect, the taste, the whole coffee thing. I just want what I want, not some starbucks burnt overpriced yuppie goop or flavorless stale mass produced cheap panacea or an ersatz substitute. If I need straight caffeine, I can get pills at the local Wallyworld.

@Ecky Have you made more batches with your IR thermometer and how did that work? The flour sifter thing I'm making doesn't look like I can use a thermocouple

Costa Rican, 5 minutes 45 seconds , recorded at 440F when I removed from heat.

I started hearing the first crack with this coffee (a first, for me) at ~4 minutes, and approximately 415F as per my thermometer. The first crack was very sporadic and seemed to continue until just past 435F, when I pulled it off heat.

According to this chart, it's a hair past a Full City. No oil visible on the beans.

One company got in federal trouble a few years ago with their caffeinated underwear.

Sounds correct, there's commentary on roasting sites that internal temp lags by 10 degrees, and FC occurs around 410+/- (don't forget calibration issues)
On my BBQ fast read thermocouple, I get FC about 395 to 420

So thank you for the report. Off to harbor fright for a offset drill and an IR thermometer.
Should be a delightful roast.
