I first observed this phenomenon around 1994.
The first space lightning picture he shows around 30 seconds and again at 2:45, it did hit the ground, you just can't see it because that thunder storm is well over 100 miles away and there's clouds obscuring the cloud to ground portion.
At 1:19 he shows a better picture, it's a long exposure but gives a better representation of what's going on.
I have sketchy Internet and wireless, some times videos cut out part way through.
I have seen the event shown at 2:25 from the ground before about November of 2012.
Looks like they're not always dependent on thunderstorms, just most of the time.

I just found out from NASA that the planet Niburu struck and destroyed Earth in May of 2003.
Then it came back and struck Earth again and destroyed it again on December 23rd, 2012.
To add insult to injury, there was an 'alignment of the Universe' from December 23, to December 25 of some year which blacked out the entire Earth.
And pouring salt on the wound, Earth's rotation stopped, then reversed direction!
I wish I'd received the memo.
