I drive this car a lot more on the freeway now, which was part of the reason for the transmission swap. I wanted the option without having to drive 50mph to keep rpms down. The taller gearing of thei 1993 CX transmission is amazing on the freeway, and on some of the secondary roads too. I'll drive some of the secondary roads before hitting the freeway at 40-45 mph in 5th gear, turning merely 1300 rpms maybe and getting anything from 70-100mpg readings on my gauge, depending on load (27%-33% or so). Warms the car up for the freeway.
I love the transmission swap, now I just have to get into rebuilding the old DX tranny with a kit and the VX final drive I bought an age ago so I can have a backup...

So jealous. I'm at 2500rpm @ 60mph. That transmission wouldnt fit a 2003 civic would it?

My understanding is no. Here's my table of Honda trans specs: http://ecomodder.com/forum/showthrea...tml#post378478. When I did the research for that set of tables, I found only one guy online who tried to swap a 2001-2005 trans for a 1992-2000 one. I don't know if he succeeded but his thread on the Honda forum that was discussing it ended without conclusion.
EDIT: but I gotta add that sometimes the conventional wisdom turns out wrong. I learned from a Honda transmission specialist that the fourth gen Civic trans can't be swapped onto the fifth and sixth gen Civics because of a supposed difference in the countershafts. But recently a guy appeared here on EM running a fourth gen Civic trans on a fifth gen engine. Go figure.

That's what I thought, until I tried to find examples and specific discussions and started seeing assertions that small differences between the 4th generation and the 5th/6th, as well as between the 5th/6th and the 7th generation D-series tranys made them incompatible without some modification. But all of the 1992-2000 d-series engines/tranys are definitely interchangeable.

2001+ D-series (D17) transmissions have cable operated shifters. And I believe the bolt pattern or mounting location changed, so they are not bolt in for 92-00 Civics and visa versa.

i've always been blown away by the "Black and Green" machine that CA98Civic has there. i own a identical civic HX, and I cant even achieve the numbers he is getting! and he doesnt even have an HX engine!
major props man on the 60@60!

Thanks! The fairly heavy molding of the car is one key factor in the 60+ number I get. But I think the hypermiling strategies are as big, especially pulse and glide. and interestingly, I think pulse and glide makes much less sense in a VX or an HX because they have taller gearing and because lean burn can't function well or at all with the repeated on/off cycles of P&G. The throttling and load levels for effective P&G strategies would also undermine the lean burn features. so your car calls for different strategies than mine, as you know. Radical aero mods would be wonderful for your car.
