One of my ski buddies referred to her Toyota RAV4 not as an ess-you-vee, but a "suv".(pronounced as a word)

It's a truck with a top welded on - just like a Ford Bronco.

In my mind SUVs can cross the car truck border. Bronco/expedition, Yukon/Tahoe are firmly in truck territory. Forester, CRV, Rav4, and the like are pretty much cars.

Arizona Motor Vehicle Division classifies suvs as "station wagons" on the title and registration.

They are pretty much a lifted station wagon with truck tires. Funny more Red Necks don't drive them !

AMC was truly ahead of their time. Apparently where they failed with this early SUV was by using the body of a station wagon.
People hated this thing !
Minivans are the station wagons of today, and back when this car came out, no one wanted to be seen in a station wagon.
By simply scaling down a ' manly' truck and adding a welded on camper shell, car makers are able to sell cars just like this early AMC and trick men into buying them without hurting their ego for driving a 'station wagon'.
SUVs are lifted station wagons.
Anyone in agreement ?

A few days ago our news said that after the hurricane fuel is being rationed in New York. They showed a long line of cars waiting in line to a gas station. Of the ~20 vehicles visible only one was not a SUV.
Unfortunately, the reporter didn't seize the opportunity to comment on gas addiction.
