I did a half tank mpg check and so far I am averaging roughly 31.5 mpg on this tank! Not too far from my new goal of 33 (50% over epa).

Record tank! 518 miles, and I had a gallon and a half left at the end of it. 34.05 mpg despite some bad rain last week.

Just filled up for the first time since owning the car. Excited to see what I'm going to get!
It was almost $35- awesome. I've been daily driving the '65 F100 all summer and that thing sucks gas like hell from the huge 18 gallon tank. So nice to only buy 9.3 gallons.
Essentially the car's gas tank is 1/2 as big and it's expected to get at least 2X the mileage, so i'll be going to the pump only 1/4 as much.... right? My art student mind isn't very good at math.

No, twice the mileage with half the capacity means you'll be going to the pump just as often, but spending half as much each time.

Just filled up on my best tank to-date. 38.8 mpg in the automatic Vibe.
Even though it was hot (90-95), and I was driving at midday, I took my time going anywhere between 60-70 on the highway between STL and KC. With all of the rolling hills, cruise is a no-no, but there were plenty of excellent opportunities to make use of momentum.
I used the AC, but only sparingly. With my upper grill blocked, at speeds above 60-65 on particularly hot days I tend to see an increase of my coolant temp to near-accessory fan need. I don't WANT to run the accessory fan it gets too warm, but if I have to, might as well get some cool air out of it, eh? So I made sure recirc was on, temperature was set to medium cool (to allow just a little of the engine air to vent through), and cycled AC on and off throughout the trip.
Plus I saw a Lotus Europa on a freight truck and a stealth bomber flying around near KC.

Nine tanks in a row above 30 mpg. It was almost all highway with the AC on but the new EPA for the car is 28 mpg highway and it include 30 minutes of stop and go traffic in Charlotte NC along with the typical summer road construction.

I'm curious, how do you do pulse and glide on the freeway without angering everyone driving behind you?

Very carefully. Worst case for me is a 5 mph swing when practical. Best is a big rig going my speed that takes the blame for being the slow guy (and provides a visual clue to the clueless zipping up behind you) and provides me with a nice big wake to do my thing in.

I got off to a bad start on the tank when I had to drive up a 4x4 road in my Acura, very slowly in first gear to get to the shooting range. 55 miles in the average was 30.1mpg. so I woke up early today so I could beat the morning rush hours and be able to technique the hell out of my drive in. I did beat the rush and thought I nailed my technique this morning (lots of good long EOC runs of .5-1 mile, plus the normal 8.5 to start things off), but still only managed 63.5mpg, which is pretty typical (my record is 67mpg for the run into work, without any EOC the best is 51mpg). I'm not sure where I lost the mileage, but I did bring the tank average up into the 37s. Still not likely to be a record tank, but maybe I can salvage it into the 38-39 range if I keep waking up early.

I get to fill up tomorrow so I can see if this tank is as good as it seems to be. SG2 is reporting 66 MPG (based on miles vs. predicted gallons to fillup) - which will be good if it pans out.
I'm on 350+ miles just now with 3 bars (out of 7) still showing on the fuel "graph". The leaden footed bug owners report 400 miles a tank I think this would probably run for another 100 or so - so 450.
We shall see tomorrow.
But a smile - maybe wrong thread - is that I get to take George on a long (!) trip to Glasgow and back, a whole 70 miles or so round trip.
