I plan way ahead and often hit the green light before comming to a complete stop. When I do have to stop and I know it's going to be 10 seconds or more, I key off. Parkinglots and neighborhoods, I admit I do California stop. At "real" intersections in with traffic and posted speed over 25 mph I always come to a complete stop. I dive safe and when signs and speed seem rediculous for the location like a stop sign in an empty parkinglot, I push it a little. Right turn onto a one way with a red light and no cars comming?? Comming to a dead stop seems excessive and pointless and most other drivers see it the same. Comming to a stop will just waste everyones time. I treat it as more of a yeild in those special cases. It's a case by case and day by day.

Best bet, plan your rout for minimum right turns to minimize the time you are "dead in the water" or forced to idle waiting for a gap to make a left. Use major roads that don't have a stop sign every block and learn to aviod intersctions/lanes with poorly timed lights.

I have no doubts that the most dangerous thing I do in a car is to actually stop, where and when I'm supposed to, for stop signs and red lights. It is not my intention to piss people off, or to hold up traffic, or use more fuel, rather I'm so often guilty of doing something else illegal (I was pulled over for driving 28 mph in a 25, a couple of years ago, and for turning "too slowly(?)") from one street onto another, that I decided that I'm not going to lose my license if I'm not having fun, if it turns out that a police car is following me. Okay, I do like to run up through the gears, and I know that the gas pedal can also be used to steer a car, and that using the bakes can let you drive faster.

BTW, I've had one ticket since the 1980's, some 400,000 miles ago...but several before that, when I used to drive slower. One daughter and I have been rear-ended 4 times during a recent four-year period, plus another three times when we were standing near our cars when they were also rear-ended. There's also no doubt that I've wasted a lot of gas, and time, driving the way that I have.

I've heard that the redlight cameras installed in my home town will send you a ticket in the mail if they catch you "California rolling" through a light. I make it a point to stop completely at every sign and light.

Not directly related to the thread, but I'm having a hard time believing it costs $4,000,000 a year to install 32 cameras and have police write up tickets. $125,000 per camera + operator per year seems... really steep.

True of any government operation though. =/

It's not outside the realm of reason, considering how many cars pass through those 32 intersections each year. You're talking about reviewing hundreds of thousands of photographs.

As for me, I always stop. First, it's the law. Second, I've found that there are far too many directions to look to account for all possibilities. As a pedestrian, I've nearly been hit dozens of times, and as a driver, I've had to slam on the brakes to avoid hitting pedestrians even after I had already come to a complete stop, checking the intersection.

I use to drive so slow sometimes, that i only have to downshift and i arrive at stop at 2-3 Km/h then i look my 2 sides and dead angle then i continue. i use my brake only if i have to. This is sometime embarrassing, because people in my rear doesn't see any brake light but I'm stoped ^^^. if i think the guy follow me too closely i put a little feet just to activate the lights then i continue.

EDIT : In winter, even slower

for those really annoying stop signs.

And for red light cameras

George Carlin makes some sense if you don't think about it much.

One airplane flies across another's path 100 miles away. They missed (a far miss if you will) Would George describe it as a far hit?

One airplane flies across another's path 100 feet away. They missed. or NEARLY hit. The two planes were near to each other and they missed, a near miss. I really don't get what George's problem there is, other than a desire to be contrary.

Look far a way those two planes hit each other a far hit. Wow look those two planes just hit each other and parts are falling on us a near hit.
