You need to check the laws for your state because, as per Federal law, an electric assist bike can not go over 20mph, some states are a little higher, but in general 20mph is the limit, if it goes up to 30mph it needs to be licensed as a moped, above that it's a motorcycle.

I'm fine with that i have a cycle license.. been debating a electric cycle but want a enclosed cabin so I can use it in the fall/ spring/winters..

My CRX is close to what i want but still to big and wasteful for commuting.. But i need to go 60 miles a day.. in all weather..

Add a rear wheel hubmotor and a high capacity LiFePo battery, something like 48V 40aH.

For example the 48V RoadRunner here:
http://electricrider.com/crystalyte/index.htm

This might be a good source for a low cost battery:
http://visforvoltage.org/forum/2702-...k-ping-battery

But get more than 20aH, you might need to hypermile to get 60 miles range out of 40aH. I'm not sure it will do long range, high speed riding, but you should get close to 60 miles range at 20mph. Actually I should not pretend to guess range, ask someone on an electric bike forum who has done it, at endless-sphere or visforvoltage.

Make a coroplast fairing.

This software will let you design boat shapes made out of flat plywood panels and will spit out the panel cut out coordinates which you could then stitch together to make a boat. Guess what, turn a canoe upside down, build it out of coroplast and it will work as a fairing.

I would build one if I had an extra $3000.

Glad I found this thread.

Does anyone have an online source for the HUB MOTOR? I am looking for just the motor on a 26 inch rim. Nothing else. I can not seem to find anyone selling this. Most places want to sell you a kit for $300 to $500 or more (I was thinking $200 with shipping included).

I do not mind getting a brushed motor. Want to use it as an assist motor so it will be wired with a spring operated switch (dead man switch) direct to the battery. My thoughts are to use this when I get tired of my commute (20 miles one way) to get home or up the hills. Eventually I will experiment with controllers and other switch technology.

Lazurus - I know this is an old message, but did you look at Litium-Ion Iron (Ferrus) technology? This seems to be the best battery technology as it can last for 1000s of cycles of charging.

Speaking of batteries, I just saw what's in the Ford Escape Hybrid. Sanyo built them a battery pack consisting of 250 'D' Cell NiMh's.

Who would've guessed that's all it was?
