Ebay auto purchase and shipping
I'm shopping for a first generation insight.
I've had good luck on ebay. I've never even thought of buying a car but the possibility of shipping is impressive. It would surely be easier and less expensive than towing it with my escape. Anyone know of someone doing that? Any advice or suggestions on going about it?

Shipping will be around $1 per mile.
The escape is quite possibly one of the worst towing SUV ever so you might not want to do that.
Rental of a car dolly one way will be in the hundreds or dollars.
2 years ago a 100 mile one way rental of a car dolly was almost $300.
That's why I built my own car trailer.

My daughter bought er Prius on line.
It was delivered by a pickup w a 5th wheel trailer with 3 other cars.
Kinda 'hot shot' for car deliveries.
Probably a lot less expensive that a big auto transport.

I Mississippi I'm sure you can get a better deal. Up here in Montana it's tough. The distances are greater and interstate 90 is not as big of a transport corridor as other interstates in the country. I shipped a Dodge Ram from here to Tennessee for $1300 but that was about 10 years ago.

I'd just keep an eye out for one that is closer.
At one point I was considering flying from Portland to NYC to buy a 2006 Acura TSX 6-speed. They are incredibly rare, and it seems the east coast has cheaper cars.
I'm glad I found one local, as it saved me from having to take vacation and drive across the country.
The motorcycle in my avatar was purchased on Ebay in 2003. I drove a Subaru 5 hours to get it, then brought the bike back on a Uhaul trailer. I got a great deal on a 2 year old bike in perfect condition.

Hi Owl, as a displaced native of the Magnolia state, I'll state that you're definitely in a low-cost area for eco-cars (though they be rare there). In Texas outside of the metro areas good buys can be had too. IIRC, small cars don't get much of a price break on shipping fees, and there's nothing like a road trip to get to know each other! I bought a Ford Ranger for my move from Atlanta, GA to Portland, OR and towed my project Karmann Ghia cross country. Great trip.

The 7.4L 3/4 ton 2wd suburban I bought was from Graham, WA, it was $1,200 to ship to NM. That suburban with shipping was a lot cheaper than local 1/2 ton suburbans with 5.7L and double the miles.

That's funny, oilPan4. Graham is little unincorporated area that's more Texas than Seattle, with lotsa military and Boeing machinists riding your rear bumper in monster trucks. However, they like 'em new and shiny, so I was able to pick up my pristine '87 F250 diesel for only $1800 eight years ago. Subarus and Pri-i command a premium on the used market around Seattle, but old trucks get exported. A large import to local dealers are used EVs and hybrids from California. Washington state is only behind CA and HI on EV market penetration, and with much milder incentives, but they're all concentrated around Seattle.

Go to the local DMV in TN, show notarized purchase papers, driver's license, and a $10 bill and get a 30-day tag. The application includes a box for casual (individual, not dealership) sale or out-of-state buyer. Check whichever suits you best. No problemo.
